Writers Strike May Cut Heroes Season 2 Short

By Sam | November 2, 2007 (7:57 pm) | More: Heroes Season 2 Spoilers/News, Heroes TV Show News

By now you’ve heard or at least become aware of the impending Hollywood writers strike, which if it happens, will mean a lot of trouble for a lot of shows, Heroes included. The strike has already claimed its first victim — the Heroes spin-off, Origins, has been axed by NBC as a result. Now, TV Guide reports that Tim Kring and company have gone back to re-shoot scenes from the December 3rd episode, “Powerless”, which was originally planned as the final episode of the current Volume Two, “Generations”, and would lead into Volume Three, and the rest of Season 2. Now, it looks as if the reshoots will ensure that should the strike happen and drag on, NBC could use the “Powerless” episode as the Season 2 Finale — which would mean, in case you still don’t get it, Heroes Season 2 would be only 11 episodes.

Here’s the full article from TVGuide:

Sources confirm that the show is going back and shooting an alternate ending to the Dec. 3 episode that, if used, would allow the episode to function as a season finale in the event of a strike. Originally, the episode was only supposed to serve as the conclusion of the current “Generations” arc. Should an 11th-hour agreement be reached and a strike averted (fingers crossed!), the alt ending would likely be scrapped.

Of course, keep in mind that all of this is worst case scenario. It doesn’t have to happen, but from all appearances, it’s very likely that a strike will happen and cripple the TV industry, including Heroes.

For more SPOILER information on the Dec. 3rd episode, “Powerless”, read our previous post. Beware, it’s full of spoilers.

Will the writers strike do what Sylar couldn’t — kill the Heroes?…

holy crap..if the season goes down to 11 episodes that would like..ruin my life..ok not really, but seriously that would suck so much..

Mathsorcerer on November 2, 2007

Oh, they’ll fuss and fight about it for a couple of weeks and then come to an agreement. Most shows will be delayed, but not shut down completely.

It would be great if Origins could proceed on schedule, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

AnoyMouse?!?! on November 2, 2007

AHHHHHHH 11 EPISODES!?!?!?! THIS IS SO _|_ SHORT

This is horrible news, If this happens we most likely will have a crappy ending to a great show.

J on November 5, 2007

if u writters c this then plz do not strike! let heroes run and if i can do something to stop it i will

N on November 5, 2007

why do that on HEROES?! Why end the season in this way….delay is better than rush

Kris on November 5, 2007

For those of you who dont know, the strike has happened and all writers have walked off sets all over the country.
This is bad news.
The worse news is that this is going to be a nasty catfight that will NOT last a short time. The Writers Guild has not gone on strike since 1988 and that strike lasted 22 weeks and killed that television season. That strike did not have to handle the additiaonal issues such as DVD royalties, online video, etc (basically the current technological media advances that the writers are not getting credit for in thier outdated contract).
This is happening and we all need to be prepared, “Heroes” will probably only be 11 episodes and Im as unhappy as you are, but these people that are striking are not rich (for the most part) and deserve thier piece of the pie.

al on November 5, 2007

I agree that the writers deserve their piece of the pie, for the most part i hope hollywood gives them what they want, alot of people or companies are finding new ways to make money and the writers deserve to be a part of it to. they should just air re-runs rather then end season because no one wins with horrible rushed endings, they could lose viewers if they try to continue the next season. this isnt just for heroes but all shows.

(L) HERoES FANATIC :) on November 6, 2007

is the show getting cancelled or postphoned?

oh crap. thats just four more episodes, what are they going to do with Maya and her brother? Can they make a good story with West? Can´t believe that they are able to put the answers to all the big questions into these few hours left…

JDub on November 8, 2007

Hopefully Hiro Nakamura will go back in time and prevent the strike from ever happening!

Rika on November 9, 2007

What I don’t understand is why they would just cut the season short. Why not just film what’s written already, air it, after the final episode, air a short apology and explain that the story will continue after the strike is resolved. Heroes is one of the best shows on TV at the moment, and the writers are right to strike to get their share of the new technology pie, but that’s no reason to punish the lo

Heroes is one of the best shows on TV at the moment, and the writers are right to strike to get their share of the new technology pie, but that’s no reason to punish the loyal viewers.

Just finish up what’s filmed, and then continue later. Heroes is good enough that its viewers will come back when it does.

Glyph on November 16, 2007

Sorry about the double post. Somehow the button got hit while I was in the middle of my sentence.

Elton on November 16, 2007

If you read carefully you’ll see that they already planned to end Chapter 2 at this time, and start a new storyline. They just rewrote a little bit so that it was more like a season finally than as if an episode was coming the next week.

Tommy Shi on November 16, 2007

“What I don’t understand is why they would just cut the season short.”

In response to the above question:

Heroes is one of the most serialized shows on TV. For the same reason that new episodes of 24 are being held off until the season can air continuously (uninterrupted), it’s much smarter for NBC to end the series in a conclusive way rather than to introduce new storylines and then take a 5-10 month break.

lola von dee on November 20, 2007

It’s not cool that the show is ending it with such little anticipation. I also hope that they resolve thier arguments and come down to a settlement. I so want to know what’s going to happen to the new characters as well as the ones from season one. This shows is awEsome!!!

Just wish I were a guildy, yay for ripping off the american public to further one’s self.

shadow on November 23, 2007

One of my favorite shows…11 episodes? No way!
The writers should stop being big babies for crying out loud. Why cant they have their strike after Season 2 is done? Geez…

Eddie on November 24, 2007

Well……how many episodes was season 1? 23, 22 something like that. I’ve read alot of websites saying season two does go to the 20 or so episodes but i just watched a show which said two more shows till the season finale…thats just gay i like how they drew out the season within almost a year or so

natasha on November 25, 2007

This is my response to any other articles i have read regarding the so called rating drop and the fact that Tim kring has had to review what he had done with the 2nd heroes and how people where used to a certain type of story telling and it had all gone off track, well good glad it did i feel the 2nd series was and is fantastic they introduced characters slowly and cleverly ones you never thought you would see again.
Hiros treck in japan has lead to adam, other favs are developing there ability it is all coming together perfectly so whats the prob ?
People get bored with the same old storylines i think nothing has been done wrong and anyone who complained was never a heroes fan AT ALL !!!!

Will on November 27, 2007

Why work when you can strike? Honestly, I can’t believe these starving underpaid writers even held off this long; their kids probably had to show up in a Ford to school rather than a BMW last month, that’s hardship!

If you give people the right to not have to work, are any of us really surprised that they AREN’T working?? This isn’t collective bargaining guys, it’s extortion; these writers should all be fired along with whoever allowed them to unionize anyway.

Their cause is as shallow as it is selfish; we need to give rights back to the real workers of this country and ban unions.

Nida on November 28, 2007

I agree with the philosophy most people are testifying: if you’re going to do something, do it right! As long as the storyline of Heroes flows between this 1st part of season 2 and the 2nd part (or the 3rd season if that ends up happening), then it won’t hurt the fans so badly if there’s a bit of a break in between.

Heroes, I will miss you while you’re gone, but as they say, absence makes the heart grow fonder!

LadyXochi on November 29, 2007

If shows get canceled, it’s not the writers’ fault, but the networks’. No need to cancel anything when you can put it on hold. Canceling is ‘great’ to scare the writers who need the job, but in the end, they won’t have a show to continue with.

Any news on the strike? Any new negotiations?

TheInfamousTom on December 1, 2007

The series is gonna be ending when volume two will end anyway. I reckon season three will be the other 13 episodes of what was supposed to be season 2 and then it will continue with season 4 when season 3 was supposed to be. I read a rumor and heard on the radio that they went back into negotiations but if they have, they are still continuing them. But they are definitely not cancelling it because the writers love writing it.

Indian girl on December 1, 2007

heroes is the best show on t.v. it is what i look forward to on mondays. but u got to understand it from their perspective, they partially created the show and writers do get less money. but right now, i want to whack them on their heads. hard.

TheInfamousTom on December 2, 2007

haha i have to wait till tuesday cos im not american haha

the-all-wise-one on December 2, 2007

I also have to wait till tuesday for heroes!

i didnt even know about this whole strike thing till last week. its slowly ruining my life!

heroes is my oxygen. if its cut short, i will die .

Yakumo on December 3, 2007

no-one should be bothered over the number of eppisodes, they should just be interested in seeing the original writers vision, effectively what ‘actually’ happens (within he constraints of the fantasy) not some half baked hack job by some nobody the networks found.

I’d rather see it delayed indefinitely till the real writers can return to work.

And I do hope the writers can get a better deal, trying to lock them into being able to make less than 10% of their normal fees for online distribution (probably for 20 years) when all media seems to be shifting that way is utterly disgusting.

JinxSight on December 3, 2007

While I agree with the above comment, as I’m a professional writer myself, I’m sorely disheartened the way this season ended… It really -really- left me wanting more. I do hope this strike comes to an end quickly but with the writer’s end and them not getting shafted.

Arhoon on December 4, 2007

Season 2 was cut short! I cant believe it! :( Well, now I shall wait for Season 3…. when will the strike end?! (hopefully soon, fingers crossed) I cant live without Heroes!!

David Yamamoto on December 4, 2007

Can’t Hollywood work this out in a reasonble time? Besides watching sports on TV, this is the show I really look forward to watching. It is the best TV show I have ever seen, and so much better than many movies. The suspense is incredible. Get a fair deal worked out!!!

Justin swatloski on December 7, 2007

It may have been short, but it was executed nicely. The made sure you knew there was a 3rd season, but by saying in 2008 they ensure that they have time to get the writers strike taken care of. As such, they have an entire year to work it out. This way they won’t be rushed and produce half as good episodes.

Sen-sen Tan on December 9, 2007

Now where is hero nakamura when we need him! go back to early november 2007 and stop the writers from striking.

no really…. this just sux. =(

Ok Writers, now you have all our attention…

But beware, Season3 may be written by the fans community :-)

I used to love you, now I wish I could open your heads (yes just like Sylar does) and extract the next episode scripts :-)

Please stop the strike, it’s becoming hell at home, without our favorite show …

Please hurry and get things fixed in Hollywood and LA so we all can have our favorite show back!!! Save the show, save the world

jake on January 28, 2008

this is the only show i watch either, nothing has grabbed me like this in years..sniff…let’s pray they end this strike soon….

Callie on January 29, 2008

Maybe a more lucrative job offer would give the show an extra edge. If the producers find more qualified writers and pay them more, we may see an even better Heroes than ever thought conceivable.

kalvin on January 31, 2008

True if they paid someone more money thae show could be “BETTER”, but the show would be different. The writers give the perspective in deatail that the views love and expect. The changing of the writers would only make the show different. So changing the writers? I vote HECK NO! and so should you. If you like the show support it as if it was your own job you were fighting for. Look and see how much the standard writer makes and tell me they dont have somthing to grip about.

Rose on January 31, 2008

Season 2 episodes:

How can I view old episodes? I saw only 5 (first 5 of season 2) that are on the networt channel?
