Default Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg):

Disclaimer: I have no knowledge of how the actual story on TV will progress. I am merely having fun and messing around. I do not own the characters, or anything else related to Heroes. This, and all subsequent attempts at writing do not garner me monetary compensation. Also, this isn't as good as Titus' work. Plus, I know hardly a thing about police stories...

NOTE: "denotes what is being said" while 'denotes what is being thought and is heard by Matt.' Also, I have no clue of the name of other police officers, so I shall take liberties in this aspect, as with everything else Oh, and since he can already hear his own thoughts...

Other Chapters:
Part 2: Talk with the Chief
Part 3: A new dilemma
Part 4: A talk with the missus
Part 5: Matt faces 2 new foes (Finally!)
Part 6: The long Goodbye…

Part 1 A Normal Day

Another day, another stale donut consumed. As he washed it down with a Dr. Pepper while finishing up his daily reports, Matt contemplated his life up to this point. 'It ain't what the boob tube promised it would be, he thought.'

Ever since he was a kid, all he wanted to be was a SWAT member, a cop who solved the crimes and put away the bad guys for the benefit of all. Here he was, a cop, all he ever wanted to be. No, not all, he was a lowly beat cop. Most of his days were filled with the monotony of paperwork, the red tape of law. He wasn't an action hero like the TV assured, he was a lowly secretary of crime, filing away the indiscretions that meant little to anyone. When he wasn't typing his reports, he was out there, a big blue bull's-eye to some punk who didn't want to pay 75 bucks for a citation. They were out there, he'd spent too many days in mournful colors consoling loved ones of fallen comrades to believe different.

SWAT, they are the action heroes of the police force. Every day, they risk their lives, but at least it's for something substantial. They catch the real criminals, the ones that keep small children's parents awake at night. Criminals who's crimes aren't victimless. Crimes that haunt the victims it didn't kill 20 years after everyone else has forgotten, resonating with the full fury as the day they were committed. At least SWAT members when they accomplish something can sleep at night knowing they made a difference, knowing they thwarted evil incarnate. That is, if the courts actually had a moment of common sense. Sure, the pressure was more for a SWAT member, but they had the power to instigate change. Plus, they usually had fresh donuts.

"Hey, Matt, did you finish your daily report?" 'Stop daydreaming and get some work done!' his partner Alejandro pondered while walking towards Matt from behind. "Jeez, Alejandro! It isn't the end of the world. I can't go home until it's done, anyway." Alejandro stops ten feet after passing Matt, turns his head back towards Matt and asks "Did I say something?" Alejandro then turns his head back around and thinks to himself 'What's his problem?' Matt, at first surprised by this, settles back into his chair. "Jerk. See if I ever share my pizza with him again!" Matt mumbles to himself. 'Pizza...hmm...I wonder what toppings should I get'

Hey SOG I think that is an excellent start to your story. Totally different voice from Titus. I like that you aren't afraid to put your voice out there and take the risk of letting others see into your thought process.

Part 2: Talk with the Chief

Other Chapters of this story:
Part 1: A Normal Day
Part 3: A new dilemma
Part 4: A talk with the missus
Part 5: Matt faces 2 new foes (Finally!)
Part 6: The long Goodbye…

Another day, another delicious pizza consumed. Sometimes, Matt secretly considered transferring to Chicago PD so he could be closer to the deep dish he so craved. It was making more and more sense. Paranoia was clouding his mind. Yesterday, Alejandro was snippy to him. While walking past a construction site near his home, he swore he could hear wolf calls and whistles. He snapped his head back and saw a few workers looking at him, one even licking his chops. He heard the guy saying 'I like me some jiggly!', but didn't observe his lips move, just his tongue. Matt didn't know whether he should run or start doing poses. 'If only my wife was like that' he lamented. Matt's dreams that night also proved frenzied.

Matt was caught at an impasse. His life was going nowhere. He was stuck in the daily rut of being a beet cop with no end in sight, and now he was being tormented by unnatural voices inside his head telling him things he didn't want to hear. Every time he handed someone a citation he could feel them judging him, calling him a 'fat donut-eating pig'. He wasn't obese, but he wasn't an Olympian either. Not even in high school was Matt so self-conscious about his weight. At least then he had friends who supported him. Now, however, he could swear even his closest friends were thinking 'It wouldn't hurt to loose a few.' Matt knew he was imagining it all. His friends weren't actually saying it, but somehow he couldn't escape the feeling that everyone around him was judging him. The only thing that didn't was a soft dough crust layered with special sauce underneath four healthy amounts of various cheeses and topped with ground beef, olives, and peppers. It didn't condemn, but rather invited steady delight until it was no more. Then the feelings would creep back in anew.

Somehow, Matt knew he was destined for more. He believed there was something he was meant to do, to become. His sense of destiny determined his desire to fight crime. He thought that becoming a cop would satiate that desire, but it wasn't enough. Matt's frustration was starting to show. All he wanted was to make a difference for the better, and he was questioning if he was making a difference at all. Matt was inattentive while at the police office, leading to recent poor performance evaluations. He wasn't going to make the SWAT, and everyone including Matt knew this fact. Constricted by his own aspirations, his life was becoming deafeningly gloomy. Yet, the roar of thoughts pounding his brain never lightened.

So much was the strain that Matt was suffering from constant headaches. He fumbled around his pockets for the aspirin bottle while pouring himself a cup of coffee. He rather liked the taste of Dr. Pepper, but finished the last of it yesterday. 'If these headaches don't stop, if these voices don't silence soon, I will have to make a visit to the police counselor. Boy, will that be fun!' "Hey, Matt! Chief wants to see you." "Thanks, Alejandro" Matt replied.

"Hey Chief, what's up?" 'Too bad he's been down on himself, he had potential' "Sorry, what?" Matt asked. For the first time, excluding the construction site, the voices carried a hint of positive thought. 'I had potential! The chief actually thinks I had potential!' The past tense was a bit frightening to Matt, plus actually considering the thoughts weren't actually his, but he was willing to suspend his disbelief for any signs of positive thinking.

"I didn't say anything" the chief said. "Oh, okay." Matt responded. "Sit down." 'Why is he smiling? I hate doing this. He's not going to be happy. Wait. Why is he not smiling now? It's like he knows what's coming.' "Matt, I am going to give you a few days behind the desk. I think the pressure of being a beet cop is starting to wear on you. By helping us here at the office will allow you to recuperate."

"So, this is only temporary?" Matt queried. "Yes." 'We'll see.' replied Chief Johnson.

I like this so far. I'd like to see if Matt uses the common cop technique of trying to get the criminal to feel like confessing is his only option or if he does something different as a telepath. :P

*rereads the top*

Not as good as my work. Thanks for the compliment. I'm looking forward to this story though. I wouldn't try it myself. I study cops and other law enforcement too much to write an interesting story. Mine would have to be too real.

Trust me, yours is good! It moves at a much faster rate! I have already finished with part 4 and still no significant progress. I am still fully exploring Matt finding out he is a telepath, and how it is changing his personal life. Yours is better pace-wise definately. And it ties into everyone else, too.

He will do something as a telepath. Since I really don't care for cop shows, I do have to admit I'm in a bit over my head. I'd rather wish it was a bit more real, but hopefully the thought process of the characters is something that is real. (Well, except for my desperate attempts at humor)

This reminds me of a movie called "Thoughtcrime" where this girl could read mine and she helps the FBI (and that guy from Stargate: Atlantis, in fact!) capture terrorists. Really good movie. i think it was supposed to be a TV show but never made it.

But um, nevermind.

I like it. I think that it needs to travel at a slower pace than Titus' work because there is a lot of mental self discovery that is not as necessary in the story line that she has chosen.
