And yes, I'm asking you to narrow it down to one. Just one! And tell us all why.
Mine is Buffy.
To me Heroes takes off from the Buffy template: A perfectly ordinary teen-age girl who only wants to shop, date boys, and jabber with her friends finds out she has superpowers and must save the world. She does it over and over again, despite death, destruction, and despair. (Yeah, that's a little over the top but who cares?! )
The difference in Heroes is that we'll be able to multiply Buffy times dozens of characters if the series lasts long enough. *crosses fingers and toes*
And of course Heroes doesn't have Joss but I'm open to new blood! Er, I mean, talent.
So, who's your #1 superhero?

Since you didn't label it down to comic books, I am going to venture down the path of a Disney cartoon. Huh:?: Goliath from Disney's Gargoyles. At the beginning of the series, he is denied everything, even his revenge. Very early on he has another chance for revenge but instead saves an innocent's life. Knowing that humans have in the past feared Gargoyles, and would in today's time if they were revealed, eventually comes to the decision to protect innocent humans even though some would exterminate them given the chance. Many times Goliath has the opportunity to eliminate a major villian, but rather chooses justice every time, even helping the villian when evil isn't the villian's goal. The series is very dark, but Goliath's shining example overcomes the void of human fear. One of the best animated cartoons ever.

Gargoyles #1 was released June 21, 2006. It is a bi-monthly comic book licensed by Disney. Thank you for asking this! I wouldn't have found out about this if you hadn't posted the question which got me searchin'!

Oh, I'm definitely not limiting this to comic books! The only comix I've read in the last, um, 25 years? have been Fray and Serenity - not exactly fanboy fodder!

I have always been a webhead. I like the idea of someone ordinary becoming extraordinary despite not really wanting to. Spidey was always the underdog in every fight, at least in the older comics, I don't know about the new stuff. My wife seems to think that I am superman though. She may be delusional.
My early comic book youth was spent idolizing The Punisher but I think it was only because he was the most accessible superhero. I mean he wasn't even a superhero just a guy with a lot of guns and guts. I guess that seemed more "real" than a guy who can shoot webs out ouf his hand or whatnot. But I grew out of him though, and I really don't like the crazy, psychotic direction they've taken him since. The whole "Max" line is just dumb.
My favorite superhero has always been Nightcrawler, from the X-Men. Yes, I have a lot of "favorites," but I keep coming back to Kurt. He's so amazingly complex. And blue. And furry. And he's got a tail.
He's so much better in the comic than he was in the X-Men movie. I guess they didn't want to do the blue furry Fuzzy Elf thing and eclipse the blue furry Hank "Beast" McCoy thing.
I didn't read many comic books or watch a lot of cartoons when I was a kid, but I remember Daredevil being a character who captured my imagination. (Of course I only knew him as Matt Murdock from the Hulk TV movie. )
