So, to get straight to the point. I'm moving next month and I needed a place to rant but my blog didn't feel like a viable option as no one really looks at it anymore.
Anyway, my mom is thinking of renting out our old apartment to someone else and she wants to leave most of our furniture here for the new tenants as it comes in a set. Now, for most of the stuff, I understand that we have no choice but to move as they are obviously, too big for out new place. I got into a debate (I won't say argument as there wasn't any hostility of sort) in whether or not my desk comes with me.
Mom says it should stay because it's a set witht he other stuff. I want it to come since I have a sort of attachment disorder. Out of everything in my room, my desk is the one place where I spend most of my time at home. Be it writing, reading, naps, playing games, chatting with friends or even when friends come over, I could always be found on my nice comfy chair facing the desk. The cool part about the desk is that it totally fits me. My laptop just nicely in the centre, speakers on the side, my mouspadpad to my right along with a paper tray for my home work. An empty space to work on to my left along with a small holder thing for my books and just enough space behind for my printer. Four cabinet to go nicely for my gameguides, files, notes and lastly, my pen and junks. Not to mention it has this wide space underneath for me to stretch my long legs.
Sure the paint has been scratch and there are some iremovable glue and pen stain on it, but it's my desk. Now that I think about it, it's my first and last desk. I've been using it since the day I got it! Oh desky, I hope I can keep you.
I know how you feel. I get attached to stuff i use all the time too. When my blow dryer stopped working, I had a meltdown. I didnt want to have to buy another one, so I sat down on the bathroom floor and tried to fix it and ended up burning myself on the coils.
I would talk to your mom and just explain that it wouldnt feel right giving up your desk.
We're still working out the kinx but came to a compromise. If I can find a desk at the store that's better than my current desk, I wont bring it along. But I seriously doubt it. This desk is just too good for me. Almost perfect if I do say so myself.
I've probably moved about, oh, six or seven times in my life. Let's see...
Apartment #1: Got a job, moved out of the house.
Apartment #2: Moved out of state for College #1.
Apartment #3: Moved back home.
Apartment #4: Moved out of city for College #2.
Apartment #5: Moved back home after college.
Home #1: Finally moved into my own home.
That's six times I've made major moves, and each time I've bought a new computer/writing desk. I guess I've always been more attached to my computer than the thing it sits on. Also, I almost never take anything with me when I move except what I can stuff into a box or two. I think the things I've thrown away during each move could probably fill a Salvation Army store or two.
And the lesson? Um, no real lesson, but moving is part of life, so get used to being able to let things go, especially inanimate objects.
Won the battle for my desk. It's coming with me...I think. Mom may have tricked me but I'll never know.
Anyways Sam, it's not that I have proplems parting, I just don't like to buy new things for something that's still in working conditions. Besides, the desk has been where I spend most of my time at home. I spend it there more than my bed and I've just gotten really used to the comfort. Also, pointed above, I have an attachment disorder.
Mom's are like that.
If she really wants the desk, you'll have no chance to change the outcome. It's fate.
I know cause i'm a mommy to ^^
But if you actually win the desk over officially, consider yourself lucky. ^^
Keep them updates coming. :P
Yeah, I know. You've punished me at leat 6 times in the other thread, thankfully your not my real mother or I would seriously think about running away . Just playing i know your probably not that bad with your own kids.
@bender - I agree with what V said. If by chance you actually get to keep your desk. Then you are very lucky. Back when I was home I didnt even get a say. It was it goes when I say it goes and so on and so forth. That is one of the main reasons why I joined the military instead of staying home and going to school. I can make my own decisions.
Secondly, your mom was willing to pay money for another desk. The SLY thing to do would have been to say that she could just give you the money if you left the desk and bought a decent one and spent the rest on something else.
