I'd suggest the Dark Ages in Europe.
It gives us a stable way of running social structure (feudalism) and gives us a huge array of cultures and climates.
Not to mention we have historic events we can tweak to make it work.
I was going to suggest that rather than havign some huge factions, use instead Kingdoms, and have small factions within.
The exception being one or two magic orders that are like think-tanks and unilateral forces for certain causes, like the Crusades and such.
But if I had to drop names, I'd go with:
Good- House of the Silver Sword, Order of the Shattered Blade, Brotherhood of Iron, etc.
Neutral- The Order of the Eternal Mind, The Avalon Consortum, The Autumn Hand, etc.
Bad- Legion of Baal, Fist of Ur, The Blightwatch Seven, Eyes of Drall, etc.
Then you ahve the classic groups: The Knight's Templars, The Teutonic Knights, The Illuminati, The Paladins of Charlemaigne (Sp?), Knight of the Round Table, etc.
