Just wanted to hear what everybody's reaction is to the general pessimism in the newspapers, saying Heroes is in a "sophomore slump" and all that.
Personally, I think most aspects of it are good, except for hiro in STUPID FEUDAL JAPAN, and Sylar's current story line. Maya and Alejandro are "eh." but could turn into something great. Otherwise I think it's still as good as Season 1. My father, who I watch the show with, looks at it in such a pessimistic fashion after reading all that crap the critics have been writing.
Sometimes people mistake honesty for pessimism. I don't agree with the people who are overly critical of season 2, but I do agree to a certain extent that Heroes IS mired in a minor sophomore slump.

Re: General Pessimism??
I think some are saying that simply because the ratings aren't quite as spectacular as they were last year; most of that is probably attributable to the fact that the show is no longer new. Some viewers have probably been turned off by Claire and West's high-school drama and some by pseudo-feudal Japan.
I agree that the show hasn't been quite as groundbreaking this season, but that is because it has such a hard time beating its own success from last year. However, I think that as the season progresses and the writer's strike is resolved we will see Heroes rise to the top again.

Maybe it's true, but the real action is about to start
I agree...i just wish all the continually-pessimistic people would admit its getting better!
A little pessimism is a good thing. You can't just keep saying "everything's great" when they're not. If you keep saying that, TPTB will never "get" it and they'll keep feeding us the same crap.
The biggest problem I've had with the show is that there are simply too many new characters, and we've had less time with the old ones; also, Kring and company keeps focusing too much on Claire's little teen angst, hoping to grab hold of all the paparazzi press the poor girl is getting (obviously it is NOT working, because despite all the attention given to Claire and her little problems, the ratings are NOT up).
I wouldn't say it's in a sophomore slump myself, but it is concentrating on things that I could care less about, and I didn't start watching Heroes to see crap I could find on the CW every day. If I wanted that, I would have, well, watched the CW.

LOL - I agree.
But I must admit, I found a show on the CW that I actually like. Have you seen Reaper? Kind of fun.
I just feel like they're trying to cram way too many characters' plotlines into one episode and it's really messing with the pacing. I think we're always going to have storylines that we just don't like, but I agree with the general consensus that Claire's teen angst is old, and sticking Hiro in feudal Japan was not the best move -- Hiro is too much a favorite to be lost in time somewhere. And the horrible storyline that Ando is relegated to -- sitting beside some dude who's cleaning off the scrolls so they can read them -- is really the worst. Who thought that would add to the proceedings??
But I'm still hooked. I think some good stuff is about to happen this week, and it's going to give everything some focus. I think the press just likes to be negative about something that got so much positive attention in the past. But I'm confident that the creators of the show will do what they need to do to improve things.
