Hey guys, I've heard so much about "Lost" that I feel like I've seen every episode. Well, most of the "highlights" anyway. I mean, you can't go anywhere without hearing about it on TV shows, magazines, etc. So as a non-Lost viewer (I haven't seen more than, oh, 5 minutes of a single episode), here are some questions I have that perhaps you Lost experts can answer for me just to satisfy my curiosity:
1) What is the deal with the smoke monster? Was it like Godzilla or something?
2) Who are the Others, and what is the deal with them? So they're not supernatural, just a bunch of other castaways?
3) What is the deal with the company that runs the island. Or the ones with the fake commercials I see every now and then on TV? Hanso something?
4) How many people are on the island, and how big is this island, because it seems like they are "introducing" new castaways every season?
And finally:
What kind of love potion did that short hobbit from "Lord of the Rings" used on Evangeline Lilly to make her sleep with him, and where can I get a liter or two?
1. we don't know much about it, but apparently it's this supernatural thing that can shapeshift and knows everything about you. a bit complicated.
2. we don't know yet.
3. alot of info on the Hanso Foundation was uncovered in the Lost Experience which was a lot like Heroes 360 (mind you, heroes 360 is a rip off).
4. the "new" castaways have always been there (well, not those actors) but are just now coming to the center of things. who knows exactly how many peole are on that island, or islands.
and finally, i too wonder how a hot chick like that went with Dom. but they're in love and i wish them the best. haha.
The smoke monster seems to be very ambiguous. If you look closely into the smoke, you can see a bunch of faces. I'm guessing that the faces are of dead people, but I don't know how that connects to the storyline.
As for the Others, I don't think they have any supernatural abilities. But there is definitely something screwed up about them.
the smoke monster isn't anything.
it can be anything.
when eko died, the smoke monster became his brother asking him to ask for forgiveness for all the "bad" he had done. and when he refused it went back to smoke and killed him.
the smoke monster night have even been what jack saw as his dad in the first season.
i doubt the others even know what it is.
and they're just people from a foundation taken over by the bad guys. researching stuff and experimenting all over the place. like mad scientists. haha.
2) The others are former scientists. This has been validated with Juliette's (an other) back story this last episode. Juliette has been on the island a little over 3 years. I am assuming some of the other "others" have been around for quite longer. The others have shown an amazing ability to sneak around the island and steal kids. No one really knows why at this point, but there is speculation that the island contains some sort of plague and the others are inoculating them. Or they could be doing different stuff. No one knows.
Prior to Juliette coming to the island, she was working on a serum/drug used to help women get pregnant. Could this be related to the kid thing? Maybe.
3) I haven't participated in the Lost Experience, so I don't know.
4) Besides "The Others" there is the Losties (plane crash survivors) and this French lady. French lady is a loner. The Losties are about 40 people strong I think (rough estimate). Losties were originally composed of 2 separate groups, The Fuselage and the Talies. Up until Season 2, neither knew the other group had survived. Since then, the survivors of the Talies were integrated back with the Fuselage members. However, only one Talie remains alive. Since there were roughly 40 Fuselage members, some of the "background" people have entered the foreground, replacing those killed off in previous episodes.

Ah, but you're forgetting about the other kids that were stolen at the same time as Rousseau's, plus the tailie's kids. I think not that many tailie kids were stolen. Weren't some lostie kids stolen too before the losties fought back? Or am I remembering the tailie kids scene?
Alex was Rousseau's kid stolen as a baby so the others have been on their island for at least 16 years. Unless of course there's a tear in the space-time continuum. Just as likely as anything else!
Oh, and the producers insist everything's scientifically feasible. I think Psy stuff, both psychology and psychic, plays a big role in their "science" so we still don't know what it is with the smoke. Maybe it projects something that makes the person looking at it see what they want to see -- or in some cases, DON'T want to see. Too confusing!
