Default IS HEROES GAINING THE SUPER POWER OF... BEING GOOD?

Article critical of Heroes writing...

I am glad there is a new tagline, "Are you on the list?"

Save the cheerleader save the world killed it for a few of my friends to even watch the show.

I agree with the pace comments, and develop the characters!

The author does make a couple of good points.

It's clear that the show has taken on a life of its own, which isn't the life Kring initially imagined.

Too much focus on Claire thus far. And yes, the catchphrase was a little kitschy. *shrug* Other shows use it, so why not this one?

Hiro does seem to suffer from flat affect. Come on--Masi is capable of more than that.

Finally, where the heck is Lindermann? So far, he's this mysterious "boogey man" that we've never seen. I suspect HRG really works for Lindermann (who also has governmental ties), not the Deveaux Society.

I agree with him that more character development would be nice. Unlike the author of the article, I care about the characters already, but he is correct that the characters so far have not evolved much at all. I don't expect nor necessarily want Lost-level character development, but it certainly would be nice to see more of.

Claire has evolved. At first she was just a whiny, prissy cheerleader who wanted nothing of her powers and lamented over not being normal. By episode 9, she had accepted her "inner freak" and really didn't care about being normal anymore. Yes, they have focused on Claire too much, but that has resulted in the most developed character evolution. Hopefully now that will start happening to the other characters.

Mohinder evolved, and then re-evolved back into his original form. As for Hiro, I think his judgement of Charlie's death not changing him was a bit rash. After only one episode he deduced it won't be explored? Since Hiro wasn't the focus for the episode it's kind of hard to make that judgement. DL is evolving into facing his fears (Niki/Jessica) because of Micah. HRG evolved into an overprotective father (as opposed to his secretly nefarious power hunter self). Eden evolved from cute neighbor girl to shady conspirator to dead girl. Nathan evolved from corrupt politician to a corrupt politician with family concerns and a secret shame or 2. These characters are subtly and slowly evolving, it's just so subtle sometimes we forget. That is real life. Individuals change slowly over time, not in a span of 2 minutes. They are going the Smallville route, which for all of its faults has done an excellent job slowly changing Lex Luthor from Clark's friend to adversary (I'm going through Season 5 right now).

He does have a point about HEROES relying too much on fortune telling. Hopefully that will be addressed. It would be nice if they get off the whole predestination fixation and start making decisions themselves.

I wanted to say this but didn't know what other conversation:

When the hell is Micah gonna show his power again? God, it's infuriating. One peek, then nothing for 4 episodes

I thought he was going to fix something in the abandoned house in the last episode. Maybe he will rig the prison doors to open and save his Mom (Nicki)

I agree with SOG. I have seen character development aplenty, although it has been more subtle than the article's author apparently wants. And much of it has been focused on getting the audience to understand who the characters are NOW. Hard to start changing characters before we initially begin to understand them.

I understand Nathan's point of view much more now that I've seen how his wife was hurt. I'm beginning to understand Niki's current mental health problems in light of her and Jessica's abusive past. And who can't see where Peter's desire to become a hero came from? He was always the disappointment, never loved as much as Nathan by their father and wanting to step out of his shadow. His power is quite ironic really. And Matt's thwarted desire of becoming a detective... It's totally there, for those who are paying attention.

I don't have as much issue with the pacing, since I think things can happen too quickly. I like to savor the events and have things revealed in their own time. I like the anticipation of the reveal even more than the reveal. It also gives time for lots of speculation and spiffy theories to be discussed. As long as the story arc is being moved along, I'm okay with it. But maybe I'm more patient than most. I dunno
