How Sylar knew?

Six months ago, Sylar was nobody, and how he knew that if he kill someone, he is going to take those powers??. He was thinking only in fixing the problem, he said "You are broken, I can fix it". However, nobody knows what happened, how did he figure it out what to do?? and why he did it? and how he asimilate those powers?. Any one knows?

I think his "power" is to be like a parasite, much like the spiders who eat their young he was talking about. Don't think he knew anything else, just a primal instinct to kill like a spider. One could argue he is fixing "broken" people, any with super powers.

Sylar was a watch maker. As his father before him. Yes, he was around watches his entire life, but we can assume that he has somewhat high intelligence. If he were of higher intelligence and understood Shandra's writings, he might have found a way to absorb other's powers permanently.

About the "You are broken" statement. He could have easily said to lure the guy into telling him what was wrong with him. I.E. His powers. He probably had this planned for a while. Notice he didn't say anything revealing untill he heard the guy say his name.

Sylar ability was to see how everything works, so if he knows how everything works, he can figure it out how to take advantage of it. Thank you for your replies guys.

Well Sylar had to have SOME power before he started leeching people's brains (perhaps that is his power), because Chandra came to him, and Chandra hasn't been wrong about anyone yet.

he basically can sense if things have a problem, which explains why he's so experienced with clocks. He also has some type of sense of things that a normal human mind could not understand(may take a while) explaining how he can take someone powers from their brains

Also, when he says to Brian that he was broken and needed to be fixed, that probably meant that he had sensed his power and wanted it
