Chapter 10
Between Lesser Evils ~ part 1
Mohinder Suresh opened the door into his fathers’ old New York apartment, breathing out a deep sigh. Everything was how it was before, everything in its place. It was as if it knew he would come back to New York, and it was just waiting for him. Setting his things down upon the desk he allowed his mind to wander for a moment. If he was going to start looking for these people, what would he say to them when he found them? Everyone around him was already beginning to think he was becoming mad like his father. But there was some truth behind it all.
Taking a seat, Mohinder lifted up the screen on the laptop computer and slowly typed in the password to his fathers program. ‘S-H-A-N-T-I’ The list of names began to scroll across the screen, quickly he picked up a pad of paper and began to write down a few names that were right here in New York; Isaac Mendez, Nathan Petrelli and Benjamin Teller. While setting the pen down upon the desk he gazed at the note pad for a second, He recognized two of those names already, one of them being the politician he tried to warn about Sylar. The other was the painter that Peter spoke of; vaguely recalling the apartment that Peter took him to in an attempt to see Isaac, Mohinder decided Isaac would be most plausible first choice. As he stood up, he remembered Eden but decided it would be for the best that he leave her out of this, for now anyways. Taking his keys and slipping them into his pocket he briskly headed out of the apartment and locked up, he was ready to follow his destiny.
~~
Peter Petrelli kept his head rested in the palms of his hands, his breathing slow. There was just too much to take in. He found the cheerleader, and he managed to stop who ever it was that was after her. What he didn’t get was that they had both fallen off that roof, how did he get away? The larger question would probably be how did he, himself survive? He remembered vividly snapping every bone in his body back in place, was it Claire, is this what she could do? He thought about it long and hard, in fact he had thought about it all night. No one had bothered to talk to him since they threw him in the cell, He was getting frustrated, how the hell was he supposed to convince them that he wasn’t the guy.
”There’s someone here to see you”
boomed a voice of one of the guards that frequently roamed the halls. Peter quickly stood up and peered through the bars with hope, that maybe everything wasn’t going to be so bad after all, only to be overwhelmed with great disappointment when he saw his brother. Nathan Petrelli stood there in his sharp business suit and red tie. Angry piercing eyes stared deep into peters. Slipping his hands out of his pockets, he raised them in question.
”Why is it that everyone in the family suddenly decides they want to go to prison during the election?”
”It’s not what you think Nathan; this is all one big misunderstanding. They have the wrong guy”
”Alright then, explain to me what’s going on”
”I came here to Texas to save the cheerleader, and I did Nathan, I did. This guy that tried to hurt her, we fell off a roof and well I died.”
Peter paused as he tried to think of an easier way to explain all this. How was his brother even going to help him anyways? This was only going to make things more complicated
”At least I think I died, but I healed, somehow but that guy, he got away, and now the police think its me.”
Nathan rolled his eyes as he tried to listen to what his brother was feeding him. All of this talk about ‘powers’ and now ‘healing.’ Of course Nathan believed it, to an extent. He could fly after all.
”Whether I believe that or not, you expect them to believe a crazy story like that? No Peter they will throw you away, and then I can say good bye to even the slightest chance of winning this election.”
Peter leaned against the bars staring down at the concrete floor. His brother was right, it sounded crazy, but what else was he supposed to say? There was nothing else he could do, everything seemed hopeless, but at least he saved her. Peter quickly stood up straight, and looked to his brother, his expression changed.
”Claire, you have to find her, she can tell them.”
”Who? Look peter the best I can do is get you a lawyer, other than that you’re on your own, I have to get back to New York.”
”Wait! She can sort everything out, all you have to do is go to the highsch-“
”Times up.” The security guard showed up, pulling out a large ring of keys and began to unlock Peters cell door.
”Visiting time is over, and you have to come with me” sliding the door aside he grabbed Peter’s arm aggressively and pulled him along, giving Peter no choice but to follow. Nathan simply stood there sliding his hands casually back into his suit pockets, calling out; “Ill send a lawyer.”
~~
Mr. Bennet stood out side a large door in what seemed to be a dimly lit hallway in an office building of some sort. Checking his watch impatiently, however his attention diverted towards Eden who appeared around the corner, followed by her silent partner, the Haitian.
”So, did you get him?” Mr. Bennet asked, a hint of eagerness trailed behind his voice, and Eden nodded slowly, and then glanced to the Haitian before turning back towards Mr. Bennet.
”He’s out cold, what about Claire, is she alright?”
”She’s fine, but I want you to wake him up, I have a few questions for him.”
”I-I don’t think that’s a good idea, we already know he’s dangerous, wouldn’t it be safer just to wipe him cle-“
”No!”
Mr. Bennet aggressively cut her off then stepped past her. “Go see to Isaac, I have to find out why he was going to kill my daughter.” He walked away from them and disappeared around the corner. Eden sighed and looked up to the Haitian, and with out words they both followed after him.
~~
Pacing outside of Isaac’s apartment Mohinder brought his hand to his chin and stared at the door. This was the second time that there was no one home. Digging for the pad of paper in his pants pocket, he brought it out and looked at the other two names; Nathan Petrelli, and Benjamin Teller. ‘Well it’s no good talking to Nathan’ he thought to himself. Nathan obviously thought he was crazy after the last encounter.
Perhaps he could try to find this Benjamin. Leaving the apartment building he found a phone booth, picking up the phone book inside he began browsing the names. ‘Teller, Teller…Where are you” gliding his finger among the pages until finally he came across it. ‘207 Power #101’ he said to him self while dropping the phonebook. Mohinder stepped out of the booth and looked around him. Hundreds of taxi cabs covered the streets, glancing to a street sign above him made him realize the street he was on intersected with Power st. Grinning at the coincidence, he rushed down the street to find the apartment that he would find Benjamin in.
Ten minutes later he was in the apartment building standing outside of #101. Taking a deep breath Mohinder knocked on the door, then turned to glance down the hall curiously. He had become impatient, already expecting the worse, that no one would be home and this would all turn out to be a hopeless chase.
Finally what seemed to take hours, the door opened and in the doorway stood a short girl, Caucasian, about 5’6’’, with shoulder length red hair, a green top, tight fitting blue jeans and a bright smile. Leaning against the arch way gazing up curiously at Mohinder she asked curiously. “Can I help you?” Mohinder stared for a second, almost forgetting why he was there. “Er...Yes, I’m looking for a Benjamin Teller, is he here?”
The girl looked puzzled for a second and quickly glanced behind her as if motioning to someone, but then looked back to Mohinder. She kept her right hand on the door, and made sure it was half closed, making it impossible for him to see anything inside.
”He doesn’t live here.”
Mohinder shook his head, not wanting to believe it; he wasn’t going to give up as stubborn as he was. “But that’s impossible, I followed the address here, it’s under his name, he must live here!”
The tone of her voice changed, it was more solemn.
”Well, he did live here…but he doesn’t anymore Sorry.”
Before he had a chance to respond she closed the door, he could hear her locking it just seconds after. Not even bothering to make an attempt to pester the girl he leaned against the wall and just sighed looking up at the ceiling. Nothing was going his way.
~~
Peter sat in an empty room; he knew it to be an interrogation room, his hands folded upon the table in front of him. He was told to wait, it was so frustrating, he had waited long enough, he was innocent and no one believed him. Finally a door opened and In walked two people a man and a woman. The man had short dark hair; he was average height and heavy set. The woman had short blonde hair, and was a bit shorter than the man. She stepped forward and raised the first question.
”They are saying you claim not to be Sylar, then who are you?”
”My name is Peter Petrelli, The guy you want got away… but no ones listening to me.”
Audrey glanced to Matt Parkman, curious if he was getting anything yet. He stared back and just shook his head, then glanced over to Peter and began to focus. Audrey spoke again, raising another question. “Then why were you covered in blood when they found you, when obviously it wasn’t yours.”
”It was mine, I – Look this sounds crazy but you have to listen, That guy- Sylar you called him. We both fell off the roof of the school. When I woke up he was gone, and somehow I was fine, as if my body healed its self completely.”
Audrey brought her hand to her face, closing her eyes, letting out a long sigh. This case was just getting crazier by the second. She looked to Matt again, but he wasn’t paying attention, obviously focused on trying to hear peters thoughts. ‘This is a joke, I don’t know why I’m even here anymore’ she thought to herself. Peter looked up, almost confused. “What did you say?” he said in utter confusion. Audrey quickly looked to Matt and Matt did the same, they both looked at each other before Matt finally spoke up. “She didn’t say anything...”
Peter looked back down to the table ‘I swear I thought I heard her say this was a joke....’ he thought to himself. Matt rushed right to the table placing both hands down as he looked Peter in the eyes “She didn’t say it, but she thought it.”
~~
Mr. Bennet stopped just before the room that Sylar was being kept in to answer his phone. Allowing Eden and the Haitian to enter the room, he walked back down the hall so he could talk privately. “He was there?” He said into his phone while occasionally looking back to the door that Sylar was kept behind. That was all that was on his mind, he wanted nothing more then to get answers and to kill him, but he had to keep his temper in check. Taking a breath he spoke again into the phone.
“Alright…obviously he’s figured out where to find them. Just stay quiet but if you can, keep an eye on him.” With out saying another word he hung up the phone and started to head down the hall, finally to confront Sylar when he heard an earth shattering scream. The door flew off its hinges and into the wall across from it, sending the hinges and debris flying in all directions. Mr. Bennet jumped back in surprise but was un able to do a thing as Sylar ran out of the room and down the all, sending more doors off their hinges until he was out of sight. Mr. Bennet finally regaining control after what he had just witnessed ran into the room where Sylar was kept only to find the Haitian laying unconscious and Eden pinned against the wall, lifeless.

Chapter 10
Between Lesser Evils ~ part 2
Peter Petrelli stared at Matt, dumbfounded. Did he hear him right? Had he just said that she thought it, and didn’t say it? Even if that was true, how would he know? Peter shifted in his seat uncomfortably resting his right elbow upon the table shifting glances between Audrey and Matt, and then he heard it; “Can he hear other people’s thoughts too?”
Peter quickly looked Matt in the eyes and nodded slowly “You can hear thoughts?” he said to Matt, beginning to figure everything out. This officer had ability too, and it was already rubbing off on him.
Audrey looked at Matt, clenching her teeth tight; she finally broke the uncomfortable silence. “Alright, so what is going on here; Matt who is he?” Matt didn’t respond, he was leaning down against the table, eye level with Peter now. “You were trying to stop Sylar from hurting someone.” He then tilted his head as he heard an unusual thought from Peter, finally raising the ultimate question. “How many of us are there?”
~~
Mohinder had returned to his apartment, sitting down at his father’s desk staring hopelessly into the computer screen which held all the names; names of people he was never able to make contact with. Rubbing his temples in an attempt to fight off an already painful headache he was already considering the idea of just giving up. The only one of ‘them’ he was even able to make contact with didn’t have any powers at all. Sure he claimed he could fly, or draw the future. Mohinder laughed to himself quietly while shaking his head. It was all so insane.
Beginning to lose himself deep in thought when an abrupt pounding on the apartment door startled him to the brink of almost falling out of his chair. Getting up to his feet he walked towards the door cautiously. He hadn’t forgotten all of the dangerous encounters he’s faced during the times he had been in New York. “Yes- What is it?” he said in a semi nervous tone as he held his ear near the door.
“Hello?” came the words of a quiet woman from behind the door. “Uhm, you were at my door, about twenty minutes ago, you were asking about Ben.” Remembering who the girl was now, Mohinder quickly opened the door, setting eyes upon the 5’6” red haired girl, her hands were behind her back. She seemed reluctant about even being there.
”Yes, I remember, Is there something I can help you with, I am really busy actually.” He lied, in fact he didn’t even know why he lied. The girl couldn’t tell if she was welcome or if he was trying to shoo her away. “My name is Crystal, Crystal Teller” Mohinders expression changed once he recognized the last name, and immediately motioned for her to come inside. As she did, he closed the door and leaned against it crossing his arms.
”You’re his wife?”
”Sister.” She was quick to correct him. Her eyes wandered around the apartment, that was obviously in a state of chaos. Boxes were everywhere, opened and unopened ones. Papers and books littered the floors, shelves and tables, surely whoever lived here was quite eccentric.
”Why were you looking for him, he’s been missing for months now.”
”Before he disappeared, your brother. Did anything unusual ever start happening. Accelerated regeneration, flying, teleportation, or telekinesis.” He listed the points off his fingers as he mentioned them to her, but already she was looking at him as if he were crazy.
In an attempt to try and redeem him self he stepped closer and held up a hand “I haven’t even introduced my self yet, I am so sorry. I am Professor Mohinder Suresh, and due to certain research I believe that your brother, may hold a specific gene allowing him to do one of these things.” As he finished speaking, he also realized, that maybe she also held that same gene, she was his sister after all. “What about you, over the past few months, maybe even years has there been anything out of the ordinary with you, or your brother?”
Crystal shook her head, “I’m sorry but no, nothing like that has ever happened”
”The disappearance of your brother, do you know why? Is there a chance that he left for solitude fearing that he was an outcast, any behavior that could be noted as out of the ordinary to you, anything at all would help.”
”No, one day he just didn’t come home, and that’s that”
Mohinder sighed, once again he was at another dead end, were things ever going to look up?
”Well why did you come here then, and how did you find me, if you didn’t even know my name?” Crystal shrugged nonchalantly her eyes fixated on the floor. “I followed you; When you mentioned my brother, I thought that maybe you had seen him recently, or maybe knew where he could be found” she paused then stepped past Mohinder and opened the door. “I guess I kept my hopes too high.” She stepped out of the apartment and gave him a quick nod farewell and closed the door behind her. Mohinder rested his forehead against door, his fists clenched tightly. Did his father have this kind of luck when he first arrived?
~~
Mr. Bennet stood aside as two paramedics carried off a body in a body bag, and another two brought the Haitian into the ambulance. Eden was dead, his silent partner hospitalized and Sylar had escaped. Mr. Bennet dug into his pockets for his cell phone, fumbling through his keys and loose change. Pulling out his cell phone his frustration got the best of him and he dropped the phone to the ground. Bending down to pick it up, he took in a deep breath of air and began to head towards Isaac’s room.
Pushing a button on quick dial, he stood outside of Isaac’s room, waiting for who ever it was he was calling, to pick up.
”Hello?”
”There’s a change of plan, I need you to go after Sylar.”
”But wait a second, I thought you had Sylar.”
”He’s escaped, and- He’s killed Eden”
His voice cracked, he could hardly say the words. He had time and warnings when he found that his daughter was in danger. But nothing told him of what would happen to Eden, he could hardly bear it.
”Jesus…Look I can’t go after him alone, there wouldn’t be much I could do to subdue him.”
”I don’t want you to subdue him, I want you to kill him.”
There was a break of silence, at first it seemed a connection may have been lost but then the voice spoke up again.
”You’re Irrational, you can’t expect me to do that, besides I think I’m better off with what I’m doing now.”
An enraged Mr. Bennet yelled into the phone “You are going to drop what you are doing, find Sylar, and you are going to kill him, use what ever means necessary.”
Before giving the voice a chance to respond he hung up, took a break to regain his composure and stepped into Isaac’s room. Isaac was in bed, drawing in a notepad. Only looking up for a second to see who it was before focusing on his art once more.
“How are you feeling Isaac” Mr. Bennet spoke in a false calm, trying to act as if everything was fine. Isaac didn’t respond to his question, he just kept drawing. He was still pale, but it seemed he was beginning to make an improvement.
“Some things have changed, you’re going to go home tomorrow and forget everything that has happened here.” He walked further into the room and began to gather all of Isaac’s paintings together. “I wanted to help you learn how to use your skill with out drugs, but that will have to wait; you are clean now, and for now, that is the most important thing.”
Mr. Bennet didn’t have his silent partner with him to wipe Isaac’s memories, he would have to risk it and let him go, hoping Isaac wouldn’t talk. “You’re daughter, the cheerleader; is she safe?” Isaac asked, there wasn’t much sympathy in his voice.
”Yes, she is. Yes my daughter is safe” As much as saying that made him happy, he felt hollow.
~~
Matt Parkman stood outside of the interrogation room with Audrey, casually glancing on inside to see Peter still sitting there, waiting for them to return. Audrey looked disappointed, every time it seemed they were getting closer to closing this case, all they do is find another question.
“He’s innocent Audrey, he’s a victim in this just like the rest of us”
”Yeah, and we’re no closer to Sylar then we were when we started.”
”You have to release him, maybe he can even help us.”
”There’s nothing I can do, and there’s nothing you can do, you’re not even supposed to be here.”
Matt frowned and turned away in an attempt to hide his anger, trying to forget the incident and the betrayal of his wife. “Peter said he saved a girl, at a high school, all we have to do is bring her in for questioning, if she can clear him, then maybe we can start making sense of everything else”
“Alright, you go to the high school where the body of the girl was found, ask around, I have to stay here in case they try to move him with out us knowing, we don’t want this to be a repeat like Ted.”
Matt nodded and disappeared around the corner, while Audrey ran a hand through her blonde hair and watched Peter through the glass. Why does this one case, end up uncovering all these people with strange and frightening abilities; Sylar, Ted, and now Peter, and most of all, she couldn’t forget Matt, he was just like them and none of it made sense.
~~
Mohinder sat down at the bar counter. It was a quiet place, only a few people milled about playing pool, and a couple sat in the corner watching the game. He ordered a drink then looked around once more. He was going to have to make a decision, would he travel to California, or would he go to Las Vegas, there were a couple other names from both destinations. Or he could wait here, He still had to try talking to Nathan Petrelli again, and then there was the matter of Peter, maybe there was some sense to what he was saying.
He caught a glimpse of a man in the very back of the bar, it was dark so he couldn’t see his face. He wore a baseball cap, and had a long coat on; He was casually drinking and staring in Mohinders general direction. Mohinder ignored it then was startled as a man took a seat right next to him, speaking directly to him. “I heard you were looking for me.” Said the man, he had fairly short sandy brown hair, strands just barely hanging over his eyes; light stubble on his chin and a sly smirk playing upon his lips.
“Who are you?” Mohinder was half tempted to make a break for it; paranoia seemed to be a familiar presence since his return to New York. “My name is Ben, and I need you to act casual, just keep drinking and don’t turn around” Mohinders eyes shifted to the side, immediately he was tempted to look against better judgment. Listening to Ben’s instructions he kept drinking, then glanced to Ben. “What is this about?”
“The guy in the back has taken an interest in you, I’m just giving you some friendly advice, it’s probably best that we go now, and find some place safer to talk. Mohinder nodded and slowly stood up as Ben did the same. Ben motioned for Mohinder to lead the way and he did, exiting the bar casually.
Just as Ben was about to leave as well he looked to direction of the shadowed man in the baseball cap, before giving him a slow nod of acknowledgment, and just as he did the nod was slowly returned, before Ben stepped out of the bar to meet with Mohinder.
