Default Helpful tidbits to make posting more fun and interesting.

Here is a thread dedicated to learning all of the interesting things that some people do, such as changing the color of their text, how to edit posts, how to quote and edit the quote you are quoting. Basically, a faq type thread.

Heroestheseries.com – how to do stuff! - Instead of posting all of these long, wordy explanations I have decided to use my new-found ability to link to the particular post I have tried to help solve certain problems. Many of these problems/questions are addressed in the FAQ link at the top left of the forum screen. If a specific question is asked, or further clarification is wanted, this is the place where those questions are discussed.

Where is the edit button? This question was asked in the previous forum set-up, and now the edit button is pretty big so hopefully everyone can see it. It looks like this --> and the button is in relation to other buttons in a picture further down in this post.

How can I tell which threads have unread posts? First, threads are bolded with new posts. 2nd, Currently 2 images to the left of the screen of the thread name signify new posts: is used for a thread with new posts and represents threads with new posts and having a certain bountiful number of replies.

Using the quote, img, and url buttons (Updated Dec 18, 2006)

How to change text color and How to insert emoticons If clarification is needed, feel free to ask.

How to perfectly hide text for spoiler purposes Plus, some other explanations by Sam and myself follow: Sam's explanation, talking about the Big Red S in the Message Editor , Sam's other similar explanation and My explanation on how to manually add the spoiler code The Big Red SThat we are constantly talking about is in the "Message Editor" (That page you go to when you are typing up a post) and it looks like this --> Updated Dec 21, 2006

How do I upload an image from my computer and place it in my post? Updated Dec 21, 2006

How do I edit my profile, my options, and reach my Control Panel where I can also change other things? The picture in that post is slightly outdated, but every button/link is in the same position on the forum page. In other words, ignore the background, everything else is the same.

How to link to a particular post in a thread: (For linking to posts made in other threads, or for giving easy access to fan fic chapters)
Easy and quick way to link to a thread
Easy and quick way to link to a post Every post and thread have a specific number attached to it, so one can use the specific "post" and "thread" codes which I'll go into deeper detail now...

Okay, say I want to link my fanfic in different thread. First, I find my fanfic titled Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg): Now, I could link it one of 3 different ways. The longest way would be to do this: [url=http://www.heroestheseries.com/vb/showthread.php?t=883] Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg): [/url] However, with the thread code now, instead of pasting the entire link "http://www.heroestheseries.com/vb/showthread.php?t=883" like so, all I really need is to take that last number 883 - signifying the number of the thread made in the forum - remove it and put it in the thread code. How? It's the same basic principle: [thread=883] Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg): [/thread] (which gives me Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg): ) Notice how thread=883 is inside of the brackets? That is where is should be, if you want the link to have a title. If you don't care about a title, then you can arrange it like so: [thread]883[/thread] However, with this once it gets posted, it will show up as just the entire link: [url]http://www.heroestheseries.com/vb/showthread.php?t=883[/url] But, I said there were 3 different ways? What's the last one? using the "post" code. It is used exactly like the thread code, except the post number is a little different. How do I find the post number? That's a good question. Take a look at the next picture, which sports the # 2 on one of my posts. Yet, that isn't the true post number!!!!

Note: Some of those little buttons are only accessible to Moderators. Please don't flip out if you can't see them on your forum

The # 2 only signifies the number of the post in relation to that thread The TRUE post number is the number of the post in relation to the forum. How do we find that? Well, we take the mouse/cursor and hover it over that # 2, much like what that yellow arrow in the above pic is almost doing. We can either click on that number, which will send us to that post seperate from the thread its in, or we can continue to hover over the # 2 and recognize that in the lower left-hand corner of the window (At least for Mozilla Firefox web browser) we see this picture below:

The TRUE post number in relation to the forum is listed as 13654

So, now that I know how to get the true post number, I can apply that to link up my fanfic thread and it's various chapters:

Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg):
Part 1: A Normal Day
Part 2: Talk with the Chief
Part 3: A new dilemma
Part 4: A talk with the missus
Part 5: Matt faces 2 new foes (Finally!)
Part 6: The long Goodbye…

If you want to see how I coded that, then look below...

[b]Heroes, Matt of LAPD (Greg Grunberg):[/b]
[post=10734] Part 1: A Normal Day[/post]
[post=10771] Part 2: Talk with the Chief [/post]
[post=10813] Part 3: A new dilemma [/post]
[post=10872] Part 4: A talk with the missus [/post]
[post=10914] Part 5: Matt faces 2 new foes (Finally!) [/post]
[post=11380] Part 6: The long Goodbye… [/post]

Okay, Every time I re-edit this post, the "noparse" code I am using to explain some things is making some things wacky, so if it seems like something isn't making sense PM me or post in this thread and I will take more drastic measures to explain things. The major problem is that the problem doesn't show up in the edit box, only when it finally posts does a problem arise.

About the 'hiding the text for spoiler purposes':

Just in case no one knew, there is a mod out there for phpBB (which this board is), will will include a new SPOILER bbcode.

Anything you type between [ spoiler ] and [ /spoiler ] would be hidden until mouseover. doesnt matter what the background text was. This would make it hella easy in the event that new themes were added.

Heres a link in case the mod/owner wants to look into it
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=290118

I've played around with phpBB a number of times, and theres a crap-ton of mods out there for it, that add a whole lot of new things.. just FYI.

Just a quick question: I didn't see any rules or similar thread and was wondering if there is a minimum number of posts you have to make before you get to display a signature? I have one but it doesn't show up.

thanks and I'm sorry if this is answered elsewhere and I didn't see it.

Using the quote, img, and url buttons

This has probably been discussed before for the most part in various posts, but I’m adding my own insanely convoluted explanations for fun.

The Quote button vB FAQ link about the quote coding (Link HERE)

When you want to quote someone, there are several ways to do so. The simplest way is when you want to quote a previous post in a thread you wish to comment on, simply find the lower right part of the post you want to quote and click the quote button. Manually, the same thing can be done by simply putting "quote" and "/quote" in brackets [] and put the text you wish to quote in between. Huh? Okay, do this except remove the spaces: [ quote ] Place whatever text you wish to quote here and when you are done quoting end by putting [ /quote ] at the end. If I delete the spaces between the brackets and the quote and /quote, this is what happens to the above example:
Quote:
Place whatever text you wish to quote here and when you are done quoting end by putting
But what if I want to title who I’m quoting? Easy, do this slight modification [ quote=whoever I want to quote ] proceeded by the text I want to quote and finished with [ /quote ] So, by removing the extra spaces from the above we get this:
Quote:

Note, nothing changes near the end only the beginning. This comes in quite handy when quoting someone outside of the forum, like quoting an online article dealing with the show Heroes. But what if I want to quote someone in THIS forum AND I want to provide a quick link to their post? Amazingly enough, this forum can satisfy your need for this! For example:
Quote:

comes from this coding: [quote=SOG; 13654] Heroestheseries.com – how to do stuff! [/quote] The 13654 refers to the true post number in relation to the forum. One thing that has changed is now, in this forum, the name no longer needs to be quote="SOG" but rather a simpler quote=SOG, no "" needed!!!

The Img button

This is useful for implementing images into one's post. For instance, if I found a picture of Ali Larter (the actress who plays Niki Sanders) that I wanted to share with the forum, I simply wrap the image location in the image tags. [ img ] http://s94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...h_510672fb.gif [ /img ] If I remove the extra spaces I get this: There mustn’t be ANY spaces between the brackets and the letters or else it might not work. But wait, how do I find an images location? Well, the way to do that differs by which web browser you are using. For me, I use Mozilla Firefox (FF). In FF, I simply put the cursor/mouse over the picture I wish to display in my post and right-click the mouse. Up should pop various choices such as view image, copy image, and copy image location. I choose "Copy image location." When I’m creating my post I use my mouse to right-click and select "paste" and the image location appears. For it to show properly on the forum though, don’t forget to wrap the image location in the image tags. What if you use an outdated IE (Internet Explorer)? Well, one way I did it was to mouse over the pic, right-click and select "Properties." (Instead of Image location.) One of the properties is the address or URL and I copied that. When I do everything else the same This happens: I used a different picture because I was bored, and I wanted to illustrate the artwork a bit more. tee-hee

The URL button

This is used to paste a web address/link in your post. For instance, if I want people to take a look at this website I stumbled upon, http://www.heroesmedia.com/ I can put a link on my post by wrapping url tags around it. Then all people will need to do is put their mouse/cursor over the link and click on it. Really, that isn't that big of a deal, but if there is a really long website, like http://www.heroesmedia.com/coppermin...p&cat=28&pos=0 One can use the URL buttons to title the web address. If, instead of just throwing out that huge ugly url/website name, I can give it a shorter name so it is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye. If I do this: [ url=http://www.heroesmedia.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=28&pos=0 ] Heroes Media fan art Gallery [ /url ] Except I remove the extra spaces I get this: Heroes Media fan art Gallery Basically, it’s as simple as [ url=website_you_want_to_link ] Whatever name you wish to give it [ /url ] This is unique in that the website is located inside the first url tag. After placing the website/url after the “=” sign (Remember, no extra spaces) the end bracket “]” follows immediately after. So [ url=website]
