Celebrity Blog: Behind The Scenes Of A Hollywood Press Party Preview NBC's Shows And Stars

Blogger Angela Williams is a producer with NBC 10.
Each year, NBC invites the press to Los Angeles to preview its new fall shows. It's a big promotion week. Many of the stars from each show are brought to a central location to be interviewed. In the TV world, it's referred to as the "Fall Preview junket." Typically, reporters are sent to do the interviews. But occasionally, as in my case, a producer has the opportunity to go. This year's event was held at the super plush Ritz Carlton hotel in Pasadena, Calif. For me, it was an awesome experience.
In all, I was scheduled to interview 45 people in two days. NBC was supposed to send me background information on each actor and each show before the junket so that I could be prepared. NBC did send a few advanced copies of some of the show pilots. But as far as background information -- I got nothing -- until about 15 minutes before our interviews started. Fortunately, I was familiar with the work of most of the actors.
This is how the junket worked: I was set up with two photographers, a producer, and an assistant in one room. I shared the room with Mark Barger, a reporter for NBC News Channel. Mark's job was to conduct interviews that would be shared with all of the NBC stations that were unable to send reporters. Mark and I would take turns interviewing each actor or group of actors. We had five minutes each. A producer would stand in the corner and keep time. When our five minutes were up, she'd give us the wrap signal. Across the hall, a reporter from the Chicago station and a reporter from the Seattle station shared a room. No other stations were represented...
Heroes
This show will be a hit! Loved it! I had an opportunity to check out the pilot episode. There's so much happening. You'll be drawn into the characters immediately. It's about ordinary people that slowly begin to discover they have extraordinary talents. They have super powers. But we don't know if they'll use them for good or bad. Heck, even the actors don't know yet. Just before we met up with the actors at the NBC Fall Preview junket, the pilot for the show was shown at this year's Comic-Con International. It's a huge annual convention for comic book fans. More than 2,000 people squeezed into an auditorium to check out the "Heroes" pilot. Several hundred were turned away because every seat and the standing room were filled. Many of the "Heroes" actors were there to get feedback from the fans. They were thrilled with the response. Be sure to add this show to your "must-see" list. It'll keep you on the edge of your seat.
Hayden Paneterriere and Milo Ventimiglia
They're just kids but they have starring roles in the new NBC show "Heroes." Hayden is very much like a young southern bell. She's sweet. And her true personality reminds me a lot of the character she plays, at least in the first show. She seems very innocent. I won't say too much about her hidden power because I don't want to give it away.
And be sure keep an eye on Milo. His character thinks he can fly. Wait until you see what happens -- great twist! He's also starring as Sylvester Stallone's son in "Rocky Balboa." The movie will be released in December. It was filmed in Philadelphia. Milo said he was shocked to see fans so dedicated to the "Rocky tradition" of running the stairs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. And here's a little inside info on the movie: Milo said one weekend Stallone filmed everyday people running up the stairs of the museum. Each person had an opportunity to tell where they're from. Milo said it may be included in the movie.
Ali Larter and Greg Grunberg
Ali is a native of Cherry Hill, N.J. She plays a struggling stripper/mother in "Heroes." She wore a fabulous casual long red gown to the interview. Greg plays a down-on-his-luck cop. Both Ali and Greg have great enthusiasm for the show. When they talked about it, they were almost like little kids with new toys at Christmas unable to contain their excitement. Remember, they don't know what's ahead, either, for their characters. We didn't see Greg's character in the first show. So I'm not sure what to expect. He plays a cop with a special power. His character does appear in the second show. Ali's character, however, is captivating. You just don't know what will happen next. She's a struggling mom whose mirror image has a secret. Don't miss it.
