The "kami" is the same as "spirit". Oh, and the 8000 Shinto Spirits is in reference to one of the post-it notes of Suresh's research.
Don't know if it'll relate to the show much, except maybe as an explanation for a Hero's extraordinary abilities, but this was interesting:
Quote:
Shintoism is about expressing gratitude and love towards everything that are awesome (Mount Fuji is a splendid example), things that are useful (farming equipments, wells, etc.), and -- this one trait is without parallel -- things that make you happy (flowers, rivers, etc.).
About being human, Shintoism digests things this way.
Every one of us has a soul, right? This soul is called 'reikon' when it is still attached to physical presence, i.e. the soul that does the laundry, gets online and bears redundant Windows meltdown. When the soul leaves that largely wretched body, it becomes just itself, i.e. what is dubbed 'kami'.
Everyone is a 'kami' when deceased, because the basis of existence is exactly that. A spirit freed from household chores and the humdrum of moneymaking is more powerful than before, since it doesn't even need airlines to go anywhere, though as a rule most of the liberated spirits just stick on to where their fleshly containers used to roam.
So they are in the position to grant wishes, extend protection, or entirely the opposite, in which case they become what is called 'yurei', AKA 'ghosts', constantly mad at someone and something, and the power they automatically have would then be used to wreak havoc among the living.
Also, Amaterasu, the Sun goddess, was born from the left eye of her father, which brings to mind the images in the Heroes promos or previews where the eclipse is shown as the iris of Peter's left eye. Probably only a ko-inkidink.

The Amaterasu/Peter's left eye connection is not coincidence.
The unspoken insinuation here is that superhuman abilities are not only genetically caused, but also arise from someone's spirit being partially "set free", allowing it to tap abilities otherwise unusable. This is no different that "chi abilities" that some martial arts practitioners or monks have been able to achieve via training and meditation.
There is another method for tapping such abilities and/or normally-dormant areas of the brain that I am investigating currently.

Thanks Hero, as a result I think we may be on to something here. Perhaps Dr.Suresh located what part of the brain contains the spirit and a way to release it thus allowing humans to tap superhuman like potential through their spirit or kami selves.
This leads us to Sylar... Perhaps what he's doing is absorbing that spirit energy from that part of the brain when he kills people and thats how he takes their powers. This could also tie in the religious connection that Sylar has (the altar boy thing).
Which also ties things back to Peter and his dreams - a possible connection to the spirit realm. He's more spiritually open than the other heroes.
And lastly, Niki / Jessica... Makes a lot of sense...

No one wants to take charge anymore and there's just lots of finger pointing and "he said she siad". Not to mention vests to stop speeding bullets, elevators for tall buildings and villains running amuck (insert evil laugh here)."
