Tim Kring Signs Record 2-Year Deal with NBC

It pays to have a network TV’s only hit show. In a year when NBC could barely pay its bills (I’m being overly facetious here, of course), Tim Kring’s Heroes was NBC’s one major (and only?) hit, and will no doubt spawn imitators like crazy next year (if it hasn’t already — Bionic Woman, anyone). Now NBC has rewarded Kring with a new 2-year contract said to be the biggest in television history. Although no details of the deal (money-wise) were given, I’m sure it has to be true if The Hollywood Reporter is claiming it. Under the deail, Tim Kring would continue working on “Heroes”, its spin-off “Origins”, and develop new projects for the network.

The main focus in Kring’s new deal with NBC Uni TV will be running “Heroes” as well as “Origins,” an anthology-type series about people around the world discovering that they have extraordinary powers.

That in itself is a huge undertaking.

“Nothing about the show has been easy,” Kring said. “It’s become a show that defies expectations each week.”

But that is just a small part of the challenges he’s faced since the blazing entry of “Heroes” into primetime last fall.

“That has been one of the big changes in my jobs, going from showrunner who oversees writing and production on a show to a person managing a brand and everything involved in that,” he said, noting that he relies heavily on his team to keep the “Heroes” armada afloat.

So two more guaranteed years of Heroes? Right on.
