Season 3 Surprise: Say Goodbye to Monica!

Now this is one I didn’t see coming, but it’s a move (if true) that I’m certainly applauding. You know how pretty much every Heroes fan were in agreement on their indifference (and in some cases, complete dislike) of the whole New Orleans storyline in Season 2, which introduced and followed the character Monica (played by Dana Davis), a Hero that can mimic any action/skill she sees? According to Dana Davis herself, who is out on the rounds promoting the upcoming DVD release of her horror movie remake “Prom Night”, the overwhelmingly negative reaction got the attention of The Powers That Be, and Monica may in fact be leaving the show.

Could it be? Could our wishes have been granted? Hallelujah!

Here’s the interview over at PopWrap:

PW: The last we saw Monica, she had caused Niki (Ali Larter) to “die,” when does the season premiere pick up?
Dana: We pick up right there.

PW: Do you play a large part in season three?
Dana: Well, I would just say to fans of Monica’s, I don’t want to disappoint them, but her storyline wraps up fairly quickly.

PW: Why?
Dana: “Heroes” didn’t get the same critical or fan acclaim in season two, so I think the creators felt a lot of pressure because the ratings dropped and it wasn’t nominated for any Emmys. And with the strike, I feel like the writers had a lot of time to sit around and think. They wanted to come back really strong and go back to what the show was in season one – less drama, more action. And they took it in a different direction that didn’t really include Monica.

PW: That’s terrible, I thought there was a lot of potential there.
Dana: Yeah, me too. I loved the character and I love the power – but I totally understand and it makes a lot of sense knowing where the story goes.

PW: And heroes return all the time – it’s a small superpowered world!
Dana: Absolutely! Tim Kring [creator] and I have talked about that, you never know when I’ll show up again!

I have to admit that this news makes me a very happy boy. The whole New Orleans storyline was just so unnecessary to the entire Season 2 run (not to mention coming across as overly exploitative in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina), and the more they tried to make Monica a part of the universe, the more forced it came across.

“Couldn’t they have found something more interesting for Micah and Niki Sanders to do?” was all I kept thinking during all those wasted moments spent on Monica learning how to cook and do kung fu and other really, really stupid things that didn’t affect the Heroes universe.

Now it appears as if Tim Kring and company have listened to the fans and dumped a superfluous character. Thank you, Tim Kring!

I gotta say, Season 3 is looking brighter already.

Goodbye Monica from Heroes

that sucks, the story kinda of sucked but her power was just plain awesome. i mean just let her go work for the company then shes out of the show but still alive with a potentially better plot

    • NavyGater

The Company does not need her, well she could be a good cook or maid lol just get her a video on that… aw burger barn hero, how I wish you were dead!

In the grand scheme of things, Monica’s story didn’t pick up the pace fast enough, but looking at Series 1, a lot of characters storylines did a similar thing (Niki’s for example). I’m dissapointed since Monica’s power was very cool and I liked the storylines where characters discoverd and learned about their powers, as oppposed to characters like Elle who are introduced with a high level of control and understanding etc.

At the same time, with all these new villains, we can leave out unnecessary people, and I suppose she fits that bill, but I hope that we do see her come back later on.

I also hope Micah sticks around…or, if he is written out of this series, he comes back in some form in S4.

Well, maybe I’m in the minority, but I quite liked Monica and I think this news sucks. The writer should not generalise Heroes fans by saying that all of them disliked her, because I didn’t.

    • Izzy

I have to agree with you, I thought she was cool, and I really liked her story line, so maybe some time in the future, she’ll come back, which would rock…

Really? Most people liked Monica and its not really a surprise since she hasn’t been at any of the season three media events or in the cast photo. I’ve been pretty sure she’s been cut from the show for months.

But they have been cut to give Niki a better storyline I’m sure as many have complained about hers.

The cast photo is just for series regulars. Molly, Adam and the Villains we know of aren’t included and yet they will no doubt feature prominently in S3. The same goes for Micah.

The writer of this news just sells nonsense. Im glad Dana joined The Heroes Universe and I’m glad she had a power like that.

    • NavyGater

EH really glad? Oh well I would be glad to see Sylar kill her in the Heroes Universe!

      • TheStranger

That’s kinda rough on Monica don’t you think? What did ever do to you. She’s just like all the other Heroes, confused about their powers…

Oh well, maybe she’ll be back.

  • Kimmy

I am glad she is going her power is just ripped off from naruto anime. See “Sharingan”

    • Tai

Are you really comparing a superpower to a cartoon ability?

If you haven’t noticed, superpowers have been out a lot longer than Naruto, so perhaps you’re looking at it backwards…THEY stole their power from HER.

      =/

      • HEROGUY

I totally agree but no one stole anything there is no copyright on powers or abilities if there was heroes wouldn’t exist

      • Kimmy

Naruto started in 2002. So I highly doubt I have it backwards. Check ya facts first,

      • Ally

A copycat power is such an OBVIOUS ability to come up with. How many little kids watch superheroes and imagine themselves with those powers? Of course other past characters have had similar abilities. Naruto is not exactly the origin of all ideas, you know.
        A few examples:
DC Comics’ Parasite (first appearance 1966)-gains physical and mental upon touch,
Marvel Comics’ Mimic (1966)- gains powers and skills of anyone within 10 ft and retains them until 1 mile away,
Final Fantasy 6 (III in US) (1994) – Gogo copies teammates’ abilities and Gau copies monster abilities,
        and Kirby’s Adventure (1993)- Kirby’s swallow-and-copy ability.

      • Kimmy

Yes there are a few similar abilties but none others you have mention involve eyes. Thats what I am getting at.

      • Ally

Hey, my comment that Monica’s power is very similar to the visual copy powers of Marvel’s Taskmaster (1980) and DC Comics’ 2nd Green Arrow (1994) was erased!

      • NavyGater

I am with Kimmy on this one. Eyes yup only it looks better on Naruto.

      • drivebyinsult

No offense, and I’ve never seen an episode of Naruto, but I highly doubt it has added very much to the canon of superhuman abilities.. Because the idea of powered people has been around since the 40s.. There are very few that have been original in a while. There are power “archetypes” like there are character archetypes… So you have your flyer, your super human strength, your invincibility, teleporter, psychic, time traveler, healer, mimic.. etc. Peter, Sylar, and Monica all fall into a mimic archetype, even if how they do it is different. But regardless they all follow other mimics of the past like those mentioned above (Mimic, Parasite, etc.) and even Rogue of the X-Men. For Monica, she most follows suite with Taskmaster (mentioned above) and Echo (from Daredevil/Avengers), all of which precedes Naruto.

So really it’s silly to say one copied another, because “new” powers are few and far between, and often are derivations or different applications of an archetype. And of course you then look beyond comics and such and get into mythology and religion for even further origins of “power archetypes”, or ideas of an ability… Invincibility with Achilles, magic with Merlin, resurrection with Christ and Buddha (talking about the concept not that Christ or Buddha was or was not super powered or came back to life.. so don’t think about an religion fight here..).

Basically what I’m trying to say is whether Heroes copied Naruto or not is a moot point.
And yes, Taskmaster and Echo both needed to see someone’s moves in order to imitate them.

      • NavyGater

I really don’t think they copied it from Naruto I just hate Monica sooooooo much that when someone said “are you really comparing a superpower to a cartoon ability” and it kinda made me mad because …. well it just did and in the time line Naruto was before Heroes thats all I am saying. Oh and Sasuke vs Monica, lol Sasuke wins hands down with his Sharingan (eye/copycat power)…. Death to Monica!

      • dave

‘aly’ — ‘copycat power is so OBVIOUS’ oh come on! ur telling me super strength (niki) and flying (nathan) arent obvious powers to come up with, out of most of the powers weve seen in the show, hers was probably one of the more unique and thought of ones and not so obvious. Everyone is moaning about her character who copies things and i ADMITT her storyline didnt link with what was going on perhaps BUT i really liked her charActer and her storyline and the events that took place during it, it gave the show a more fresh thing to focus on and took a break slighty cause sometimes thats what it needs when the shows main storyline may drag abit so its good gettin something fresh in so were shown new things to be interested in, wow thats enough to write, HEROES ROCKS!!!!

      • dave

apologies to ally, after re-reading your comment i think u were defendin her lol if u were well done! and my comment still goes for anyone who says her power and storyline etc was boring and expected cause the show is more or less based on that NOT BORING ONES!!! cause its gr8 just the powers are admittedly ones that are fairly often thought of, heroes rocks again!!!

Good. the only scene with her I actually liked was the one where Suresh refused to inject her with the virus. but that was more about him, not Monica.
