Season 3 Surprise: Say Goodbye to Monica!

By Sam | August 20, 2008 (9:12 am)

Now this is one I didn’t see coming, but it’s a move (if true) that I’m certainly applauding. You know how pretty much every Heroes fan were in agreement on their indifference (and in some cases, complete dislike) of the whole New Orleans storyline in Season 2, which introduced and followed the character Monica (played by Dana Davis), a Hero that can mimic any action/skill she sees? According to Dana Davis herself, who is out on the rounds promoting the upcoming DVD release of her horror movie remake “Prom Night”, the overwhelmingly negative reaction got the attention of The Powers That Be, and Monica may in fact be leaving the show.

Could it be? Could our wishes have been granted? Hallelujah!

Here’s the interview over at PopWrap:

PW: The last we saw Monica, she had caused Niki (Ali Larter) to “die,” when does the season premiere pick up?
Dana: We pick up right there.

PW: Do you play a large part in season three?
Dana: Well, I would just say to fans of Monica’s, I don’t want to disappoint them, but her storyline wraps up fairly quickly.

PW: Why?
Dana: “Heroes” didn’t get the same critical or fan acclaim in season two, so I think the creators felt a lot of pressure because the ratings dropped and it wasn’t nominated for any Emmys. And with the strike, I feel like the writers had a lot of time to sit around and think. They wanted to come back really strong and go back to what the show was in season one - less drama, more action. And they took it in a different direction that didn’t really include Monica.

PW: That’s terrible, I thought there was a lot of potential there.
Dana: Yeah, me too. I loved the character and I love the power - but I totally understand and it makes a lot of sense knowing where the story goes.

PW: And heroes return all the time - it’s a small superpowered world!
Dana: Absolutely! Tim Kring [creator] and I have talked about that, you never know when I’ll show up again!

I have to admit that this news makes me a very happy boy. The whole New Orleans storyline was just so unnecessary to the entire Season 2 run (not to mention coming across as overly exploitative in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina), and the more they tried to make Monica a part of the universe, the more forced it came across.

“Couldn’t they have found something more interesting for Micah and Niki Sanders to do?” was all I kept thinking during all those wasted moments spent on Monica learning how to cook and do kung fu and other really, really stupid things that didn’t affect the Heroes universe.

Now it appears as if Tim Kring and company have listened to the fans and dumped a superfluous character. Thank you, Tim Kring!

I gotta say, Season 3 is looking brighter already.

Goodbye Monica from Heroes

that sucks, the story kinda of sucked but her power was just plain awesome. i mean just let her go work for the company then shes out of the show but still alive with a potentially better plot

In the grand scheme of things, Monica’s story didn’t pick up the pace fast enough, but looking at Series 1, a lot of characters storylines did a similar thing (Niki’s for example). I’m dissapointed since Monica’s power was very cool and I liked the storylines where characters discoverd and learned about their powers, as oppposed to characters like Elle who are introduced with a high level of control and understanding etc.

At the same time, with all these new villains, we can leave out unnecessary people, and I suppose she fits that bill, but I hope that we do see her come back later on.

I also hope Micah sticks around…or, if he is written out of this series, he comes back in some form in S4.

Well, maybe I’m in the minority, but I quite liked Monica and I think this news sucks. The writer should not generalise Heroes fans by saying that all of them disliked her, because I didn’t.

Really? Most people liked Monica and its not really a surprise since she hasn’t been at any of the season three media events or in the cast photo. I’ve been pretty sure she’s been cut from the show for months.

But they have been cut to give Niki a better storyline I’m sure as many have complained about hers.

The cast photo is just for series regulars. Molly, Adam and the Villains we know of aren’t included and yet they will no doubt feature prominently in S3. The same goes for Micah.

Are you really comparing a superpower to a cartoon ability?

If you haven’t noticed, superpowers have been out a lot longer than Naruto, so perhaps you’re looking at it backwards…THEY stole their power from HER.

A copycat power is such an OBVIOUS ability to come up with. How many little kids watch superheroes and imagine themselves with those powers? Of course other past characters have had similar abilities. Naruto is not exactly the origin of all ideas, you know.
A few examples:
DC Comics’ Parasite (first appearance 1966)-gains physical and mental upon touch,
Marvel Comics’ Mimic (1966)- gains powers and skills of anyone within 10 ft and retains them until 1 mile away,
Final Fantasy 6 (III in US) (1994) - Gogo copies teammates’ abilities and Gau copies monster abilities,
and Kirby’s Adventure (1993)- Kirby’s swallow-and-copy ability.

drivebyinsult on September 10, 2008

No offense, and I’ve never seen an episode of Naruto, but I highly doubt it has added very much to the canon of superhuman abilities.. Because the idea of powered people has been around since the 40s.. There are very few that have been original in a while. There are power “archetypes” like there are character archetypes… So you have your flyer, your super human strength, your invincibility, teleporter, psychic, time traveler, healer, mimic.. etc. Peter, Sylar, and Monica all fall into a mimic archetype, even if how they do it is different. But regardless they all follow other mimics of the past like those mentioned above (Mimic, Parasite, etc.) and even Rogue of the X-Men. For Monica, she most follows suite with Taskmaster (mentioned above) and Echo (from Daredevil/Avengers), all of which precedes Naruto.

So really it’s silly to say one copied another, because “new” powers are few and far between, and often are derivations or different applications of an archetype. And of course you then look beyond comics and such and get into mythology and religion for even further origins of “power archetypes”, or ideas of an ability… Invincibility with Achilles, magic with Merlin, resurrection with Christ and Buddha (talking about the concept not that Christ or Buddha was or was not super powered or came back to life.. so don’t think about an religion fight here..).

Basically what I’m trying to say is whether Heroes copied Naruto or not is a moot point.
And yes, Taskmaster and Echo both needed to see someone’s moves in order to imitate them.

I really don’t think they copied it from Naruto I just hate Monica sooooooo much that when someone said “are you really comparing a superpower to a cartoon ability” and it kinda made me mad because …. well it just did and in the time line Naruto was before Heroes thats all I am saying. Oh and Sasuke vs Monica, lol Sasuke wins hands down with his Sharingan (eye/copycat power)…. Death to Monica!

‘aly’ — ‘copycat power is so OBVIOUS’ oh come on! ur telling me super strength (niki) and flying (nathan) arent obvious powers to come up with, out of most of the powers weve seen in the show, hers was probably one of the more unique and thought of ones and not so obvious. Everyone is moaning about her character who copies things and i ADMITT her storyline didnt link with what was going on perhaps BUT i really liked her charActer and her storyline and the events that took place during it, it gave the show a more fresh thing to focus on and took a break slighty cause sometimes thats what it needs when the shows main storyline may drag abit so its good gettin something fresh in so were shown new things to be interested in, wow thats enough to write, HEROES ROCKS!!!!

SEASON 1 WAS EPIC BECAUSE THEY BUILT CLARE UP AS ONE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS THEN IT WAS HER LIFE ON THE LINE, SEASON 2 WAS ABOUT A STUPID GLASS VIAL…NOBODY IS GOING TO GET INTO A STORY WHEN ITS NOT SOMEONES LIFE DIRECTLY ON THE LINE!! WHAT YOU WERE SAYING ABOUT THE WHOLE UNNECESSARY NEW ORLEANS STORY ARCH IS COMPLETE RUBBISH! LOOK AT MAYA AND ALEJANDRO! THEY WERE LESS NECESSARY THAN MONICA AND THEY HAD WORSE POWERS!they drove through mexico in clare bennetts car and they didnt even pick up on that, the guy who stole the car and helped them get that far got killed, they get caught by police and escape straight away, its all pointless!!! OMFG IM SO MADDDDD!!!!!!!

i hope to god they give her a good worthy run for her money and they dont just fob her off or i will be seriously annoyed! its like “woo lets get rid of linderman the awesome healer and lets introduce Bob the Alchemist, Lets get rid of Monica and her ability and lets make Mohinder spiderman!” i cannot wait for season 3, but i think they’ve made a HUUUGE mistake here! they got rid of the wrong newcomer for the sake of making a new stupid love story that wont last the season…..BAD MOVE WRITERS!!!! Monicas was easily the most interesting and promising new character story arc of season 2.

Just letting her drop out of the story and keeping Maya is a crime.

Dont believe the hype. Kring and his writers have NOT been listening to us.

More new characters, more romance (or “Mo-mance”), more dropped plots….

I COMPLETELY agree! As I recall, Maya and Alejandro were the ones looked down upon, and although THEIR story line was easily more interesting, Monica’s character was far more captivating. That sucks. While her season 2 storyline with Micah was off, she was still an interesting character and I kind of hoped that they would have had a better story for her this season. Her power was really cool too. All I can say is I hope either:

A)Peter encounters her to absorb her ability

or

B)Sylar kills her to steal her ability

Monica has the potential to be one of the most action oriented characters. Personally I think that Tim Kring just didn’t focus on Niki, Micah, and Monica like he should have. They should have been in the premiere of season two, Monica and Micah should have run into another hero, like Claude or Meredith, or Bob should have came to Monica a lot sooner and should have stayed in touch longer then when he did. Niki should have gotten more scenes and Micah should have gotten his own story line, instead of just been thrown into Monica’s.

Even though none of these happened, I was hoping that Monica’s character would be given the chance to prove herself to all the New Orleans story haters.

I have to agreeeeee. Monica was a great addition and I am quite sad at her parting. I actuall really get exasperated at all these people who keep complaining about new characters. New Characters are great if you think about series one there were loads of characters in there - Claude, Meredith, Isaac, Simone, Candice, Linderman etc - Second series just replaced some of them. New Characters are new blood and we should have faith in Tim Kring that he knows what he’s doing even if he has made a mistake with Monica.

hirosfan61 on August 22, 2008

I agree, Monica actually had a lot of potential. Sure her storyline was uninteresting, but that’s only because she and the rest of the sanders/hawkins clan didn’t get their due. I’m disapointted, but hopefully she’ll make a come back later when they can make her story more relevent.

See, instead of killing off every character that is declining in ratings, they should just slowly have them dissapear from the main stream and bring them back later if possible. Because its just getting ridiculous how if there is a character not that important or that fans aren’t all that enthusiastic about, they kill them and wait to see what the response is. And if fans don’t take to the killing, they some how bring them back. I know its a comic book oriented show and weird stuff happens in comic books where characters return from the grave somehow (Bucky, Elektra, Aunt May, etc.), I’m a fan of comic books, but this is getting stupid.

I don’t want to be one of those fans of any series who feels they can do a better job. So far heores hasn’t been so dissapointing, its a great show even with season 2. The only thing I would change is the need to kill everybody. What we want to see is great stories like we are getting in the Heroes graphic novels, now those have great stories. If they can just find a way to make Heroes the series and Heroes the graphic novels meet, then they’ll have a great mix.

hirosfan61 on August 22, 2008

I’m sorry, but there are a few subjects about the show that I feel need to be adressed. Some fans are probably not going to agree with me, that’s fine. Some of you may actually make more than I’am, but here it goes. Two things I think need that should be either changed or stopped are:

1: The importance put on Sylar. Yeah, I’m sorry but it had to be said. Dont get me wrong, I love the character. But the way its looking in the promos for season 3, he’s becoming way more important than he really should. For example, the screen time he got in season 2. He had no powers, but got more screen time than most of the new or main characters. And his story was followed a lot more. He’s a villain, and he folowed more than most of the main characters and the only character who it seems to have no chance of dying in the near future, while the other character’s lives are in limbo and we don’t know if they’ll live that week or not. I see there are possible new storylines for his character that probably fit with the new season and will make a whole lotta sense ( it is called villains) but after that I think they need to concentrate on a another villain and 86 Sylar. Maybe Adam Monroe. We’ll see.

2: Claire’s constant need to be normal. I’m sorry but its getting ridiculous. We can’t enjoy the main storyline like the Shanti virus arc, or the other characters because we always end up watching Claire complain about being different. In season 1 her story made sense because she was the main ingredient in the Blowing up New york arc. In season 2, her storyline was more unimportant than the New Orlean’s storyline. The only thing that made it relevent was HRG’S conflict with the company. Hopefully this will change in season 3.

That’s it, I’m done. If anyone disagree’s, you’re more than welcome to reply and I will be corrected.

That’s so awesome! If peter aborsbs monica’s ability, he’ll learn 2 wield a sword this season. I want 2 see him sword-fighting w/ hiro or Adam or even his future self! That’s be so awesome!!!

I think I known why they’re writing monica out in series, because the fans don’t want 2 see a hero that’s runs in tights or spandex & they thinks it might ruin the show. I remembered this on g4 last year at comic con preview. Blair butler asked tim kring that’s there’ll be superheroes comtumes in the show & he says “no”. I don’t blame him that’s he don’t want cheesey-ass costumes on the heroes. They don’t want 2 ruin the show (& like people whose ruined smallville).

In the end of vol.3, Micah’s leaving new oleacn w/ his mom(she’s back 2 being plain, old nikki). They left his grandma’s house. Monica stays behind at the house. Micah’s wondering what’s happening 2 his cousin monica. That’s my guess what’s going 2 happen.

You may be pleased but it sucks. Monica needn’t have stayed in new Orleans and if Micah’s storyline is going to end that was no reason to end Monica’s. I’m gutted, she easily had the best power in the show (no negative sides to it at all, unlike practically all the others).
I think this is a mistake, they could have done so much with the character (she had potential to go bad too if need be). What a waste, and yet they keep the pointless and irritating Maya (I’m sure the actress is lovely but the character needs a slap)! If anyone from season 2 needn’t to be fired it should have been her, I suspect the fact that she was eye candy for the fellas whereas Monica is more a normal looking woman (very pretty but she’d not intimidate most women in the looks stakes).

(Report This Comment to the Mods)

LilyPad on August 24, 2008

I thoroughly agree. If the actress who played Monica looked like the actress who plays Maya she wouldn’t have been fired.

It’s saddening that the writers seemingly haven’t taken on board the problems the audience had with season 3. I personally loved most of the series with the exception of the Maya and her brother storyline. Most of the critisism was aimed at Maya and her totally useless power (as my deadpan Mother put it “Why doesn’t she just wear waterproof mascara?!” *lol*).

There is no need to keep her in the show other than as something for the blokes to gawk at (which is such a shame as Monica was such a positive character, she was smart, kind, sassy and a really good role model, and it’s rare you see such positive black characters in such a universally well recieved show), Maya isn’t that positive (she’s very thick and bimbo-ish, and there is nothing to her character other than looks. Her power can only be used for evil and the fact that she’s not a villain then makes it totally rubbish. For someone who can kill people so easily you’d think the daft woman would grow a thicker skin and stop crying all the time).

Hopefully Monica will not be gone for good and will return once the writers get their brains in gear and write better storylines for her (cos that’s really the only problem with her character). I’m very disappointed, I was looking forward to her getting more and better storylines this season, it’s a real shame they weren’t skilled enough to figure that out and do it. It’s rare in the show that a female character isn’t scantily clad most of the time and isn’t just rated because of her looks, Monica was more than that and I’m gutted to see her go (I hope it won’t be for long). >:(

Ruminations...the act of meditation on August 24, 2008

Please stop hating on Monica. Her story-line is as crap as everyone else or as better depending on which side the wind puts you on. New Orleans tragedy is real and some writer thought it good to put in to reach possibly more people or give a character a sensible moral compass beyond that of the other characters in the series. Her abilities rock and to me she seems like she would become misguided to the dark side and then finally find the light. I am really liking Maya and overall the addition of so many languages in the series. I am happy to see them touching on a variety of cultural backgrounds. Again, Monica’s powers rock!

hirosfan61 on August 27, 2008

Just to correct the comment made earlier. Those examples about Parasite, Mimic, etc. don’t really match up with Monica. They go more with Peter and Sylar. No Peter doesn’t touch to get powers, but he mimic’s others powers and Sylar gets his powers by “stealing” them from other Heroes. Monica’s power is physical mimicry. She can only mimic physical actions by watching them, like Sasuke in Naruto. Though, I don’t think that being a COPYCAT isn’t an obvious power, flight or super-strength are obvious powers. Physical mimicry is a more complex power.

(Report This Comment to the Mods)

Ally on September 3, 2008

Well I got around to checking this forum again and replied that Monica’s power is very similar to the visual copy powers of DC Comics’ 2nd Green Arrow (1994) and practically identical to Marvel’s Taskmaster (1980), but maybe some moderator is editing me out.

(Report This Comment to the Mods)

Ally on September 3, 2008

I’m surprised. Maybe it was edited out because the description of the scene in which Taskmaster’s “photographic reflex” power is introduced–as described on Marvel’s website (involves copying cowboy moves seen on TV)–is nearly the same as the introduction of Monica’s. It certainly wasn’t for any sort of offensive language. Even with the strong similarity, it could still be coincidence, but if someone is actually trying to censor me, it makes me wonder otherwise.

I dunno… they hated Maya too…and Mohinder doesnt have a host of fans either. it’s always the petrellis and the ever-whining Claire with the all-seeing surrogate dad. A cute lil soap opera in the making here…with action instead of drama.

I am inclined to agree with someone who said earlier on that they could have done something else with Niki and Micah Sanders… That whole new Orleans storyline ?? CRAP !!! They were too cut off from the rest of the Heroes universe. I see they dragged Ali’s character from it, but left her minority son behind. Kid didnt stand a chance…lol

Yep, that’s Hollywood for yah ! Dana, all the best in your future endeavours

I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

But can I just ask. If you hate heroes so much then why are you on this fan site? Go and talk crap on an anti-hero site or something…

THIS SUCKS!!!! i think monica is way cooler than maya. monica has the potential to kill the person she wants to kill but maya she has no choice but to kill everyone around her if she wants to. ugh if they cut out ali to thats where i draw the line

well maya can control her powers now, but yeah i agree monica should stay maybe not for this volume but the next one id like to see her come back, what i would like to see is a fight scene with monica that shows her fighting and when ever she pulls off a move it shows the tv/movie that she saw to gain that experience, like if she pulls off a back flip it would flash to a martial arts movie or something, that would be really cool
