Heroes Episode Review: Season 2 Episode 9 (2.09) Cautionary Tales
By Sam | November 19, 2007 (1:44 pm) | More: Heroes Episode Reviews, Heroes Season 2 Spoilers/News
As Season 2 Episode 9, “Cautionary Tales” commences, things are heating up. The connection between Peter and his new buddy Adam Monroe (aka Takezo Kensei) has been revealed in last week’s “Four Months Ago”, as well as the fate of poor D.L. (You would think a guy who can phase anything could handle a bullet, but apparently not so much.) Meanwhile, Mohinder seems to have completely given in to the ways of The Company and his boss, Bob, who is selling himself as a good guy (and succeeding). And let’s not forget, all is not right in the Bennet household — but then again, what’s so new about that?

We begin in Heroes 90210, where Claire and HRG clash over West and Claire’s pep rally because, let’s face it, all the world’s wars can be traced back to what happens at pep rallies. Unbeknownst to the Bickering Bennets, Mohinder and Bob have arrived in sunny California with Elle to deal with the HRG problem. And oh yeah, did I mention that Elle is Bob’s daughter? In any case, they better hurry, because the Bennets are splitting town. Well, that was the original plan, anyway, and when you work (or used to work) for the Company, things have a way of changing fast.

In Japan, a mourning Hiro says goodbye to his father in his own way, by traveling back to the past, to the night of his father’s death. But as we all know by now, Hiro’s past-changing abilities are not exactly, shall we say, foolproof. Hiro, it should be noted, seems to have gain tremendous control over his powers of late, but will that be enough to save Kaito? Father and son have a heart-to-heart — in the past, no less — that will decide Kaito’s fate.

Back in New York, Matt Parkman and a rejuvenated Molly struggle with normalcy. Matt has also discovered a new facet of his power, a new ability he is not entirely reluctant to use on those close to him, like another certain Parkman. The power comes in handy when Matt goes back to an incarcerated Mama Petrelli for some answers. So who exactly is Adam Monroe, and what does he want with the last woman in the picture, the redhead? Victoria Pratt is her name, but what is her game?

“Cautionary Tales” is what we’ve all been waiting for ever since Season 2 commenced nine weeks ago. There is major progression in the HRG-Claire-Company storyline, something we’ve all been waiting for, and the arrival of which comes through like a breath of fresh air. The hectic pacing of the California storyline as HRG struggles to save his family, intercut with the somber, contemplative mood of the Hiro storyline, results in easily the best episode of Season 2 so far.
And how does it end?
Hint: Isaac Mendez hasn’t been wrong yet.

Well, sort of.
MIA for this episode: Sylar and the Wonder Twins, the Petrelli and Sanders clan.
Notables:
Claire is a good speller…

Matt knows how to get his point across…

This is no way to impress your girlfriend’s dad…

They don’t call it Sunny Cali for nothin’…

The mysterious Victoria Pratt…

No one leaves The Company. No one…

errr EXCITED!
DNaraku on 19 November 2007:
Nooooooooooo Noah!!!!!!!!
LCH4 on 19 November 2007:
this episode was probably the best so far. I mean, when I’m up pacing the house during each commercial break…that’s tense. I was devestated when Noah was shot…..devestated. But it occurred to me that Bob took Claire’s blood and Claire & West left Noah’s body with Bob and company. Then the final scene of the episode……….wow.
As for Mr. Parkman….apparently Mrs. Petrelli was correct…like father like son….or is it?
We shall see…..two more episodes to go.
h0n on 20 November 2007:
why the resume of cautionary tales is not as long as the other resumes before?? I wanna more…
B A T M A N on 20 November 2007:
i won’t be happy till i watch ALL the episodes! ahh!!
Marv on 20 November 2007:
Remember Ted Pratt?
Is Victoria his Mom?
mchip on 20 November 2007:
This episode was by far the best in my opinion. It kept me on my toes and it went by so fast! I watched it until the end, and I was stuck blinking and wondering, “What just happened?” Awesome. Incredibly awesome. The last scene left me speechless. The scenes with Hiro and his dad were so touching. Matt doing his Obi-Wan thing in SW IV was incredible. I wonder if Elle’s gonna confront her dad about Noah’s secret. I just hope the writer’s strike can be resolved soon because having it end in two more episodes is depressing after having watched this one.
Steff x on 20 November 2007:
I Cried Wen Noah Got Shot :’( And the Hiro and his Dad bit.
So glad Noah’s alive Yay!!
West is Hott.
Just saw w preview for ep. 10 can NOT wait!!!

Steff x on 20 November 2007:
Ted Pratt I Knew I’d heard that name before!!!
I bet Victoria Is His Wife Although there is A Grave Of Hers?? Hmmm…
x
J on 20 November 2007:
ted pratt who is that?
J on 20 November 2007:
do you guys mean ted SPRAUGE the radioactive man?
AA on 20 November 2007:
Do you think VP is related to anyone on the show? The Ted would have been interesting - too bad the writers didn’t make that connection.
Joya on 20 November 2007:
The name Ted Pratt sounds so familiar….i’m trying to go back and figure out what his connection is to the story.
Can anyone help me out?
Amy on 20 November 2007:
yay HE’S ALIVE!
cant wait for next weeks
Whitney on 20 November 2007:
why mohinder?! why?! argh!!!! but i am relieved to know that he’s alive! but what about the ashes?
Dave on 20 November 2007:
I have to say, I got that Heroes Excitement/Adrenaline Rush that i was getting in Season 1. All of Season 2 I hadn’t felt that rush until this episode. Sure the previous episodes were good but i just didn’t get that special Heroes Rush until this episode.
10/10
Benjamin on 20 November 2007:
yeah im pretty sure there’s definitely no Ted Pratt…..your all thinking of Ted Sprague…and our favorite brain taking villian killed him last season remember??
who knows, he may come back with the new “Claire Cure”..but i dont think Victoria has anything to do with Ted….my guess is she had to do with Mohinder somehow..hmm
Kels on 21 November 2007:
i hatw mohinder.. Poor claire she gets taken by the company and her dad is killed by mohinder. At least claire’s dad is alive thanks to bob who took claire’s blood. But why would the company want to revive him it looks like his in a similar cell to where peter and adam were kept. Anyone have any other ideas?
Rosy on 21 November 2007:
My thoughts are:
1. Mohinder needs to be kicked. HARD.
2. West earned some boyfriend points. It’s no longer just a soppy love song.
3. Victoria=…relation to Niki?
4. I’ll post more later…
Neil on 21 November 2007:
I am just throwing this out there. What if Adam and Peter took HRG and then went to Primatech Industries and used Adams blood to bring him back! I mean who Peter and Adam want to take down the company it makes sense sort of!
Rosy on 21 November 2007:
I’m pretty sure it was Bob and Mohinder… but that’s an idea.
Thoughts (continued)
4. The show is at a stalemate. No one can die (Claire and Adam) and people will do things against their will (Matt and Maury)
5. Peter will have to decide between Hiro and Adam. Who will he choose?
6. Where is Caitlin off to? Is she dead?
7. Elle will revolt just like Claire did when she found out the “truth”.
8. Peter will see Elle again and will be like “whoa… and either “get away from me” or she’ll make a “move” OR
9. elle will start to like mohinder. even though someone should kick him
10. west will act as a helping head to claire’s family and lyle won’t like it.
11. as for alejandro and maya, i really dont care. no me importa. they need more than this 2 episode slot to make me care. same with monica, even though her character’s naivety makes me want to care.
12. this is going to sound horrible, but sylar’s become a no me importa too.
13. matt needs molly to slap him. MOLLY NEEDS TO KEEP HER GUARDIANS IN LINE.
samourai on 21 November 2007:
after watching this episode, i was crazy!!! of course, like most people, i was so devastated with HRG death. I was very sad. He got no ‘powers’ but he is so important! And I hate Mohinder for now. I really want to know later if he got any ability. And poor Hiro, I think there is a deadly fight coming with Adam aka Takezo Sensei. Revenge… And the finish is OMG! Cant wait for the next episode. So bad that season 2 will only have 12 episodes
ryan on 21 November 2007:
yet again another great episode. kudos
i just wanna know what is miss petrelis power. and what is hiro’s dads power.
also i heard that 3 main characters are gonna die but i don’t know which ones.
311 on 21 November 2007:
Heroes is finished, after episode 11 the only new content will be online. Writers strike wins, we lose.
Milo on 21 November 2007:
Episode 9 was fascinating and kept me at the edge of my seat. Matt extends his mind reading capabilities to persuade people. West
Pratt rings a bell, If I am not mistaken he is the invisible man from season I, and given his age, Victoria is probably his wife, and Pratt is not dead!
Gripping finish, I was so relived to see Noah revive, and yes someone should kick Mohinder really hard, for all, he could have shot Noah in the ribs.
It is sad that Season 2 is going to end and surprising Sylar isn’t killing people anymore.
Claude on 22 November 2007:
Nuts. Actually they will continue Heroes to chapter 24- not just 11-
they named chapter 12 MEANING
so they’re still on the go!!!
chapter 13 is called HOTHEAD
clue** a certain girl with hawkins as her surname shows something extraordinary
another** sophie is tarking good care of HRG
Claude on 22 November 2007:
CLAUDE is not surnamed Pratt
he’s the invisible man
who coined a great word
empath- pain in the @$$
he’s Claude Rains
the only Pratt is The long haired man who was wearing hoodie- Nicholas Pratt
** hint
the iguana named after mohinder :]
T-Bolt on 23 November 2007:
Mohinder is a traitor now, he crossed a line and can no longer be trusted ever again. HRG should have shot him when he had the chance. Just getting in the car with him was too risky. Why was Elle handed over without being disarmed in some way? Too much was left to chance it was all sloppy especialy for HRG.
Bullet to the brain should kill you period, Claire and Adam’s blood should not be able to resurrect the dead. The company had Adam for 30 years, shouldn’t that leave them w/ all the miracle blood they could ever need. It seems like if one took regular shots then you could live forever.
Though I wasn’t happy with some decisions made I think this was the best episode this season.
Benjamin on 23 November 2007:
T-Bolt…..why shouldn’t Claire and Adam’s blood be used to heal others?? its what makes the most sense…don’t just because you didnt see it comin..
Benjamin on 23 November 2007:
redo: T-Bolt…..why shouldn’t Claire and Adam’s blood be used to heal others?? its what makes the most sense…don’t hate just because you didnt see it comin..
311 on 24 November 2007:
Some people’s comments are just simply dumb, did you not watch the whole episode? You know who I’m talking about.
Anyway, for all you smart people out there I thought the episode was great, HRG alive? That was quite a shocker, now what will happen though? Caitlin is still stuck in the future, Sylar is gonna eat some brains soon and Mohinder is a sith lord… Only 2 episodes until it’s all wrapped up
I heard that the writers’ strike was ending the show for good and that we would not get to see Volume 3. Anyone able to confirm/deny this?
kensei on 26 November 2007:
The writers strike better be settlted soon or I,m going to jump off the empire state building.
Tanya on 27 November 2007:
FUNNY!
darwin pratt on 14 December 2007:
out it this way…
so then thompson is alive??
