Heroes Episode Review: Season 2 Episode 11 (2.11) Powerless

When we last saw Heroes, it was heroes versus heroes: Peter Petrelli, now allied with the duplicitous Adam Monroe, was confronted by Hiro in Odessa, Texas; Sylar has finally made his way to New York with Maya, and now faces off with his old foe, Mohinder; Claire, meanwhile, has decided to stop running and confront Elle and the Company; and Monica, having gotten a hold of her inner hero, finds herself captured by some New Orleans gangbangers, because, you know, she’s hopelessly useless that way. What will “Powerless”, quite possibly the final episode of a shortened Season 2, bring us?
We begin in New York, as Mohinder comes face to face with Sylar once again, except this time Sylar is the one with the gun. Maya is also there to cook them eggs, which is awfully nice of her. Off to Mohinder’s lab they go, Molly in tow, for the promise of a cure to Maya’s terrible power and Sylar’s lack of power. And when Maya asks Molly to find her brother, she gets a rude awakening, leading to a confrontation with Sylar. Well, sort of. It was dull knowing ya, Maya.
In Petrelli central, Angela has been released from jail, thanks to Matt Parkman. Matt and Nathan want information on Adam Monroe, but Angela is not willing to part with it — that is, until she learns Peter is still alive. Angela sends the dynamic duo off with one pearl of wisdom — one shot, through the head, for Adam … and Peter, if necessary. Oh, motherly love, it’s so grand, ain’t it? And so how do Matt and Nathan reach Texas? Well, one of them can fly, and you know plane tickets nowadays, it’s ridiculously high. Peanuts?
Meanwhile, over at Matt and Nathan’s eventual destination, aka Primatech Paper, the much-heralded confrontation between Hiro and Peter commences, leaving Hiro on the floor unconscious, Adam with his sword, and Peter still as gullible as ever. This leaves our other dynamic duo free to cut a swath through Primatech paper’s surprisingly thin layer of security on their way to the Shanti virus, held in a thick vault below the faux company. But the question is, will Peter finally see through Adam’s charade? Um, probably not. By the way, Peter, I have some swampland in Florida and a bridge in New York to sell ya.
In sunny California, all is not well, nor all that sunny in the Bennet household. Claire has made a fateful decision to save her family — reveal her powers to the public and take down The Company. Or something to that affect. She’s not exactly a long-term planner, so good luck trying to figure out the girl’s chances of success. But before she can act, a familiar face appears. And no, I’m not talking about West.
Speaking of which, at the Company, Elle’s confrontation with Claire in the previous episode results in estrangement between father and daughter. Or should I say, even more estrangement. Bob Bishop, it would appear, is quite not Father of the Year. Ever. Unfortunately for him, HRG is there to lend an ear to Elle, much to Bob’s chagrin. And who is that on Bob’s super secret security monitor? Why, it’s Sylar, in Mohinder’s lab, and Elle so much wants to make daddy proud of her…
Meanwhile, in New Orleans, Micah goes to Niki for help to rescue the captured Monica. Remember, Monica is pretty much useless, so when the gangbangers decide to “countrified” her with some gasoline and lighter, she’s all but dead unless Niki and Micah get there first. Which leads me to this question: Is it wrong of me to hope that they don’t make it in time?
“Powerless” gives us superpowered battles, but nothing of comic book proportions. Then again, if you were here last year for “How to Stop an Exploding Man”, you won’t be expecting flying “Matrix”-style fisticuffs. This is Heroes, and Heroes has a style all its own. That means superpowered fights, yes, but no outrageous stunts, although a time freezing confrontation between Peter and Hiro does come somewhat close.
Thus ends Volume 2, “Generations”. Next stop:
Volume 3, “Villains”…

The anticipation for tonight’s episode is so great that I’m not even thinking about Christmas unitl I can get past this episode…
…okay, it’s not that great, but I’m so hyped about “Powerless”.
My only reservation is this: there is a lot that has to be summed up in 60 minutes. I don’t know if they can do it…well they can, but can they do it well? I imagine that the scene show in the preview of Sylar injecting himself and moving an object with his mind could be the cliffhanger for the next Chapter, Lord willing and the Strike don’t rise. Though I would love to see some sort of confrontation between Sylar and Adam Monroe. I can’t however picture how it would lead to that in tonight’s episode.
They have set it up nicely for Noah and Claire to ally in the downfall of The Company. I hope they realize it and profit from it. The preview said two Heroes will fall. Does that mean die? Or fall from grace? Or what? We’ll soon find out.
I’m excited, can’t wait.

im kinda curious as to what exactly Sylar is injecting himself with?….since Suresh has access to Claires blood and it has been shown to heal(HRG for example)…is it possible that sylar gets his hands on it and uses it to heal himself?

Everyone, accept it, its maya (but revives), nikki & finally nathan (but its said his dead is unexpected, so that means we dont know if he dies or not, it will end like a cliffhanger, just like season 1, that it makes us undersatand that peter and nathan die), maybe he’ll be back but sick, weak, o about to die, but his little brother wont let him, do you, besides why everyone says that he hasnt do much, in ep 1×23 in one episode in the end he does much than everyone sacrificing his life for 0.7% of the world (New York) o could have died, and in season 2 he’s desperate on looking his brother, thats much. Every character has his reasons on what to do. All have something to do!!! Hope Pasdar, & Later may come back. What a Jip… Tonight’s episode was by far the best this entire season with a “get to the point” mentality but guess what?..Now we have to wait until freaking Fall 08 until volume 3 . What a JIP!!
The Plot twist with the changing of Nathan getting shot at the end rather then getting sick from a proposed virus outbreak( First indicted before the strike happened) was great! Naoh appears to be the one who shot Nathan. Niki dying the same way D.L died as a hero in a fire was predicted but still good. So I guess the formula is add 2 new heros and take 2 old ones away..

“Powerless” was awesome. It was. It wrapped up what needed to be wrapped up and left hanging what will be ironed out in Volume III. They left us hanging on top of one seriously high cliff. That’s for sure.
I’m not sure when the show will begin production, will it be when the strike ends, or are they waiting for Fall 2008? If it’s fall 2008, that’s Horrible!!! with a capital H.

They said the next eppisode is in 2008. They never said fall. Maybe its like a bunch of the other shows. I mean, at the end of Chuck they said new eppisodes in “2008″ as well. So my guess is taht they know they wouldn’t be able to produce more eppisodes, even if the strike ended, before the new year, so they are covering their butts. but my guess is that its coming back in Jan or Feb.

Well good episode overall, I was kinda sad that Nathan died, but at least he got to talk to Peter first before he croaked. He was the only one who was able to talk Peter out of it, why was that? Why are all the characters so gullible?
It sucks that HRG is gonna re-join the company to abduct and shoot people. Elle finally does something right, Maya dies and is reborn? Why..
Also Niki died in a dumb way, I don’t even like the character that much, but she was cooler than Monica. So some good changes and some bad. Was it an acceptable episode? Yes. Was it the best episode ever? No, not by a long shot.

It shoulda been Monica and Elle. Now we wait for a very long time most likely for the other episodes. Watch out Molly, Sylar knows where you live now and he likes your brains.

Great episode. Awesome way to end it. I like the possibilities it could lead to. But Im not presuming anything that happened is final. The plot twists are drastic and many and they are always from left field. Anything is possible. Great ending.

Under that logic, wouldn’t it be unlikely for Angela to kill her own son? That dark figure walking away looked an awful lot like her, AND we don’t know what her powers are. Pandora’s box, indeed.
All in all, I thought last season’s finale was better, but it’s not really fair to compare. I like that this was a way to wrap up Volume Two, but they wouldn’t have had to if the bloody writers’ strike wasn’t still going. Come on, AMPTP - give them a fair deal! We have shows to watch, and if I have to see another episode of Leno from the early 90s I’m going to scream.

I definately think it was Noah that killed Nathan. I think the Company made him do it as punishment for betraying them.

I also agree its cheap as hell that they can bring anyone back from the dead with Claires blood.
I think Kring should leanr from past shows and comics (im talking to you Joss Whedon), that killing your characters then finding a way to bring them back every time is cheap, and it cheapens the importance of death. If this show wants to hang on the “human” factor of these characters, thier mortality is paramount (with only a few exceptions).

In terms of the second season finale, it seemed as though things got too complicated for the creators of the heroes. They had created so many plot threads that they just couldn’t figure out a way to pull them all together in the end. The result was very unsatisfying to say the least. The Maya and Monica plot threads just went nowhere. A lot of great possible plot development just was left unfulfilled, like the cheerleader angle. In the end, everything was rushed to be completed in the one hour time slot. I hate to say it because I loved season one, but if the plot isn’t simplified in the future and more time isn’t given to develop plot threads, then what’s the point of watching a fast-forward mish-mash?

It was H.R.G who shot Nathan, it was orders given to him from the company since he re-joined them to protect his family. I hope Nathan doesn’t die. They could bring him back by making it look like all he got was shot but didn’t die. Or heal by getting injected with Claire’s blood. I don’t Peter’s blood would work because although he can heal like Claire/Adam it’s not his original ability. And I think the blood needs to be from a “pure breed” sort of speak, for it to work. Also, to bring someone back to life using Claire’s/Adam’s blood, you have a certain amount of time before you can do it before all the orgins in the body dies. Or if the brain is completely dead, then I guess it wouldn’t work. But what’s really important here is that Sylar is back….MUUHAHAHAHA!

I agree that it probably was HRG working at the request of the company. Its kinda sad if it was him.
I really doubt that nathan will “stay” dead. The company will probably get a hold of him.
I thought it wasd a good midseason episode. I hope its not the last we see until the fall.

I think they killed Nikki to give way to Micah. They are going to make a new story on how Micah will become a hero now that he’s an orphan. Isn’t that how comic book heroes does it? An orphan and a secret identity, like spiderman and batman. I don’t think they will kill Nathan though, I think they’ll inject him with some of Claire’s or maybe Peter’s blood like what they did with Mr. Bennet. Arrgh! I hate waiting! I wish volume 3 will start sometime soon.

@CCtheHero: Eventhough Sylar gets his hands on Claire’s blood it will only do him good temporary. It’s more likely he’ll get after Peter as he possess the ultimate ability to absorb ones abilities with killing this person. Peter is the complete opposite of Sylar and therefore Sylar’s most fearful opponent.
@everyone: It’s quite likely that it is Peter shooting his own brother. If Nathan would have exposed himself and everybody else then the world have become mad. The majority of the people wouldn’t understand how it’s like to be “special”. After the exposion there would be a manhunt on humans special abilities. It’s in human nature to fear what you don’t know. We can already see this in our own twisted daily lives.

I’ve just watched this episode on Irish television and am really annoyed at the treatment that Ireland and the Irish got on this series. Cork is portrayed as a dark, dreary dangerous place and the only main Irish character is stranded by one of these supposed “Heroes” in a terrible future. Peter is so stupid that he doesn’t realise that by destroying the virus he has permanently stranded Caitlin in the post-virus future that he brought her to. Great way to treat your girlfirend!
