Heroes Episode Review: Season 2 Episode 1 (2.01) Four Months Later

By Sam | September 24, 2007 (9:26 pm) | More: Heroes Episode Reviews, Heroes Season 2 Spoilers/News, Heroes Videos Multimedia Downloads

Tonight’s episode takes place “Four Months Later” after the end of Season 1, and it feels twice as long since the Brothers Petrellis came together and flew into the sky, taking with them New York’s doom and saving the city in the process. Meanwhile, the fates of D.L. Hawkins and Matt Parkman, both suffering from gunshot wounds at the end of “How to Stop an Exploding Man”, hang in the balance.

So who lives, and who dies?

Four months later, the answers are revealed. Well, most of them, anyway.

Heroes Episode Chapter 24 (2.01) Four Months Later

We first catch up with Mohinder, who is doing what he does best — lecturing on the coming of the Heroes. Of course, no one believes him. Would you? No one, that is, except for a balding old fella with glasses representing The Company. Is this the mysterious Bob that we’ve heard so much about? Whoever he is, he delivers a convincing recruitment speech — and, of course, a threat or two. What’s a job offer without a threat and promises of answers? And oh yeah, a golden spoon? This guy scares me. But then again, middle-aged guys with glasses and job offers always scares me.

Our first look at Season 2’s latest Heroes, Maya and Alejandro Herrera, find them fleeing border patrol agents in Honduras. The two are battling their way through South America on their way to America, where they hope to find salvation for their problem. Apparently that problem involves a murder — for which Maya and Alejandro are wanted for. Or, more specifically, Maya is wanted for. How dangerous is Maya? Let’s just say you don’t want to make her sit in the front seat with you. Stupid human smugglers and their lecherous ways.

First day at a new school in California brings reminders of the past for Claire (those cheerleader outfits sure look spiffy) and something new (young West sure looks dreamy; I’m sure all the girls will be swooning). The family (under the guise of the Butlers, no less) have relocated, but fears of the past remains. HRG, in particular, is on the lookout for members of The Company, even as he continues his, ahem, paper profession.

P.S. Have I mentioned that high school angst is so CW? Please, Tim Kring, spare us the bitchy cheerleader storylines. It’s, like, soooo last season.

Our re-introduction to Matt Parkman finds him embracing the NYPD Blue, having left his LAPD career and ex-wife behind. (Wait, wasn’t she pregnant when he bailed?) He is still in New York, caring for young Mollie, whose dreams of “the bogeyman” continues to haunt her. Who is this mysterious villain, and since when did Mollie become such a moral authority? The girl sure has grown up since we last saw her, hiding under various furniture.

Back at Kirby Plaza, Ando (sporting impressive hair, I might add) has remained behind in America with Hiro’s father, Kaito. Hiro’s story, meanwhile, continues in Feudal Japan, where he promptly saves the life of his hero, Takezo Kensei. Feudal Japan is a dangerous place, apparently, filled with bandits, guys in masks, and oh yeah, childhood heroes who turn out to be very, very disappointing in flesh and blood. Speaking of which, David Anders’ Japanese ain’t half bad, although I do wish he’d stop peeing in the forest. But that’s the English for ya. (Just kidding, guys, don’t write letters.)

But what of the Brothers Petrelli? Nathan is very much alive — and bearded. And no, those bottles aren’t just for show. Mama Petrelli is distressed by her son’s current state (he is still holding out hope that Peter, who has gone missing, will return), but when she finds a picture of herself with a bloody red mark across it, she realizes there are bigger fishes to fry. And hey, didn’t Kaito just find a similar picture of himself sporting the same red markings? Methinks something bad is about to happen to the remainders of the old guard, which used to count Papa Petrelli and Linderman among their members, and we know what happened to them. Happy endings are so hard to come by nowadays…

Heroes Episode Chapter 24 (2.01) Four Months Later

There are a couple of missing faces in tonight’s premiere: D.L. Hawkins is nowhere to be found (dead, we presume, considering Leonard Roberts’ lack of presence in all the recent rounds of promos on and off the air), and Niki and son are also MIA.

And as for Peter? Oh, don’t worry, kids, Milo isn’t going anywhere if those cuffs are any indication…

Heroes Episode Chapter 24 (2.01) Four Months Later

An all-around outstanding episode for a show that hit it big like gangbusters last year when no one expected it to, but now comes into its sophomore year with high expectations. The introductions of Maya and Alejandro are well done, while catching up with the old cast was a pleasure. The only bump in the road is the Claire storyline, which will appeal to the tweens in the audience, but will bore everyone else over the age of 13. But hey, if we must endure generic teen angst, at least there’s a great payoff with HRG and a certain obnoxious manager in the lunch room. Ouch, that must hurt.

And as for Hiro, still trapped in Feudal Japan…

And this guy. Watch out for this guy. He looks way too normal to not be dangerous…

  1. I miss you Niki!!!
    Only watch because of you!
    Heroes=Niki
    Ali Larter the best actress!
    Today, i don´t see her!
    I am sad!

  2. Phill, go watch Resident Evil Extinction, you can catch more of Niki there!

  3. SO glad Niki wasn’t there, shes the only bad part about the show. Sadly i feel her coming back though

  4. You need to go watch season one again guys! Niki was the best character on the show hands down! She should have got the Emmy nomination instead of Hiro. Whether its good(Niki) or bad(Jessica) you always wanted her to win.

  5. Anyone else notice that the bad guy in Mollie’s dream was Sauron? I swear the whole “I see you…” soundbyte was a direct ripoff of the Lord of the Rings! Only they got it wrong in the pictures. Sauron only has the one eye, not two. Duh NBC!

Anybody else see a “revenge of the abandoned child” plot in Matt’s future?

Any speculation on who it was that killed Hiro’s Father? It could have been Nathan, who can fly, or DL, who can phase (except the perp was white), but I tend to think its somebody previously unseen. I was sad to see Mr. Nakamura go. He was too cool…. of course we don’t know what his power is yet… so who is to say he’s really gone?!!?!?!?

  6. [...] Heroes the Series has another one here [...]

  7. i so love NIKI!!!

    she’ll be back!

  8. Well, there was a lot of Lord of the rings’ dialogs during season 1 specially between Hiro and Ando

  9. i hated Niki, she was just a crazy b*tch with a split personality. she’s a babe, but useless. i mean, since when are crazy people considered heroes and genetically enhanced humans?

  10. Great show, but the accents in the scene set in Cork were ridiculous, had those actors ever even heard a Cork accent? Sounded like the weirdest mixture of American/Cockney and Paddywhackery accents I ever heard. Kinda ruined the drama of the show for me :(

  11. Excellent episode!

As published previously on this website, Maya Y Alejandro “scaped” from Dominican Republic. On this first episode we saw them in Honduras, on their way to the U.S.. It is interesting to see latin characters on the show, but both Honduras and Dominican Republic are at the Central America.

Best wishes from this Brazilian fan of Heroes.

  12. I thought the season opener was great. I knew they wouldn’t get to everybody, but they did what they could.

Maya’s power looks awesome and painful.

I’m seconding sasa on what’s up with Nathan’s face in the mirror at the bar?

I don’t think Kaito is dead for good.

What was up with the red katana that Ando was carrying? Wasn’t he given the black katana by Hiro at the end of last season and Hiro took the red katana to kill Sylar?

  13. heroes 2 didnt start in my country yet. :( so just reading the previews.
can anyone tell me wat Maya’s and her brothers powers are???

whens heroes gonna start here in bangladesh !!!! :(

  14. Yang, you may be forgetting that Hiro leaped without his sword. Presumably it was collected from the scene by Ando.

I rejoice in this production, but a bit of me is chaffing at one of the characteristics of the show, which is also exhibited by The 4400. It is not logical that such an abundance of wild talents should be presenting, while at the same time each protagonist acquires only a single talent. The cases of polymaths (Peter, Sylar, Isabelle Tyler) are extremely restricted.

If a single genetic factor (the Suresh ‘genetic marker’ and the presence of Promicin respectively) is causing these things to happen, I would expect that any given talent would be picked up by every affected person, and that standouts would be in the overwhelming minority.

Still, I can easily suspend my disbelief, which is what it’s all about!!!

  15. I found the episode 1 of Season 2 simply awesome. This promises to be very entertaining. What I enjoy most is the music.
And I’m glad that Peter’s state is finally revealed. I was afraid that he would not feature in Heroes anymore. Poor fellow! Lost his memory as it seems.
By the way, who is that scarred man reflected in the mirror where Nathan looked? I thought he looked like Peter.

Thumbs up for this excellent episode review!!

  16. Ando new hairstyle is cool.

  17. That was an awesome episode. I just dont understand how Peter got where he was and how Nathan covered up that scar that showed on the reflection….This Season looks like its going to be very entertaining. And give us questions like thw 1st season.
    I loved it!

P.S. ummmm……..sbd2hug (Léo), Just wanted to let you know that Dominican Republic is NOT in Central America…. Dominican Republic is on the same island as Haiti!

  18. Anyone notice that The Company is still out there..and they all know Peters fate! They waited till Nathan finally took his destiny, and then used a hero to get them both…obviously Nathan and Peter share the same power. Wouldn’t Nathan die when his brother exploded and sent radiation towards him? The scar of course is what The Company fixed. And of course we musten forget Peter! Peter was placed in a place were they thought no one would find hm and must have been checking on him…that or the haitian found him! Peter wouldn’t forget anything unless someone made him forget…Amnesia is hard to get and theres like only been 2 cases n 1 out of 3 hospitals. Not a lot at all. And His brain would regenrate anything that caused the amnesia…Say Hello to the haitian again! But once again may i bring up what the mysterious bob said ” We sometimes have to dispose of the out of control ones..” maybe kaito and mama petrelli are dangerous to the company now that there sons are ready for there destinies…We’ll find out tomorrow at 9

  19. i thought the episode was brilliant. But heroes, which is my favourite show really insulted me with the cork accents. They should have researched cork slang and accents before doing it. Cork people dont say boss…dont have a cockney slang and definately dont sound like drunk leprachauns! Tim Kring insulted Cork people an probably everyother Irish person with this stereotype accent

  20. When will Heroes season two start in India???
I cant wait! This sucks.. :p
But thanks for the previews and comments.. they’re fun to read, but I so wish I could watch the episode!

Got Something to Say?
