There are MANY easy and satisfying middle ground solutions if only the writers were clever enough to think them out.
If Peter ever does regain his original ability, empathic mimicry, make it just that; EMPATHIC mimicry.
“Empathic Mimicry” Peter (Take Two)– He actually has to understand the person in order to acquire their powers–not saying he has to sit everybody down for a psychotherapy session or try to fix their sob story in order to gain the ability, but it should take some effort other than simply being in the vicinity of someone who has a power, and it should also be somewhat of a risk psychologically–after successfully empathizing with a villain, it might be a bit more difficult to take them down, or even worse, he could risk becoming them–ala 'The Hunger' which was actually a pretty good concept, but poorly executed and terribly wasted! And then on top of that, make it a two-sided coin: if there are characters he can no longer relate to or no longer feel any ties with, he loses the ability as a consequence. Under these rules, as of this season, Peter would no longer be able to fly for example (no, not because Nathan is technically dead, but rather because Peter has made a point of not really dealing with his brother–then again, under these rules, flight would have been rather challenging for Peter for most of Season 3 as well…but you get where I'm going with this).

“Touch-and-Absorb” Peter (proposition 1)– Can hold a set number of abilities at a time (like say maybe 3-5), but with each ability he absorbs, he loses another; so lets say he absorbs Flight, Superstrength, and Self-Regeneration (using 3 for simplicity's sake), if he absorbs TimeTravel on top of that, he risks losing any random one of the abilities from above.

If that's too restrictive, let's say he can absorb as many abilities as he wants, but each power has a different shelf life according to how well they suit his personality or overall need (similar to how the abilities were originally implied to work). Since saving people is important to Peter, he may be able to hold a Healer ability longer than say the ability to shapeshift. Again, each power has an unstable half-life, so there are some abilities he can hold for a number of days, some he can barely keep for minutes; he never knows until he absorbs and tries…

Just thought these would be some rather interesting ways to bring Peter closer to his old self without necessarily overpowering him again.
I do agree that Heroes fans are rather hard to please on the subject of Peter's abilities, I mean, let's face it, next to Claire's ability to be an awkward mix of hot and annoying at the same time, he's got the most controversial ability on the show!
Just my ideas on fixing one of the problems in that respect.

I do wish they'd give us a good fight scene, EVERY fan who watches the show wants a Sylar vs. Peter face off (a real one, not behind closed doors with lots of flashing lights). This is the one reason why I don't think either Peter or Sylar will ever die, not until the series ends for good. The one thing everyone wants is this fight it's the one and only thing the producers have not given us. I just wish they'd hurry up and get some action into this season, it's good but there's too much story and “to dos” and not enough action and doing.

i reckon that peter will slowly be able to control his power more and more, so he will start to be able to hold onto more than 1 at a time, like when he got the deaf chicks power he did not mean to do it it just happened maybe the carnie's super speed is still in there and maybe peter just might absorb sylars abilities all at once. that would be good because he would not have the hunger thing because it is with sylar's memories inside parkman

Yeah I always noticed that people didn't complain about Sylar being too powerful but Peter was a common complaint….Your right though and even the next episode description says without the use of powers….what is that. I do want to see some action for sure but nonetheless I think they'll go somewhere big and action packed soon enough. Parkman has always rejected his powers since the beginning really, im used to him bein a weenie, maybe Sylar and Matt will do some epic mind battle stuff…we've seen parkman fly in dpahnes head so in his own head maybe he'll fight Sylar and use a ton of powers who knows. might b cool though.

To follow on from above, do people not think the best scene there has ever been in heroes is when Sylar and peter had their first fight in that house in the first series when Suresh was being held by Sylar? Its because for once Sylar had to work when using his powers, he did not just defeat his opponent with one power. He had to counter Peter's abilities with different ones of his own.
