Heroes Episode Review: Chapter 3 (1.03) One Giant Leap
Peter is really having a difficult time adjusting to his flying (or is that hovering?) from last night, but Nathan still doesn’t want to hear about it, especially with a reporter nosing in n his brother’s “suicide attempt”. In Texas, Claire has eyes for the football Captain, her interest made easier after a rival blonde cheerleader claims credit for Claire’s rescue via the pilot. In Vegas, Niki still hasn’t finished her desert “expedition”, but she’s found something that relates back to her ex-husband and fugitive gangbanger D.L. In Tokyo, Hiro returns, seeking aid from fellow cubicle dweller Ando, who is finally convinced after a traffic incident showcases another one of Hiro’s powers — the ability to stop time in its tracks.
Meanwhile, back in New York, Mohinder Suresh and the cute neighbor girl (I still think he’s a plant for Horn Rimmed Glasses guy) discovers papa Suresh’s secret diary, which leads them to some guy name Sylar. Speaking of which, telepathic L.A. cop Matt finally convinces hardass FBI chick Chloe Sevigny that he’s telepathic, leading to an offer to join up to hunt a serial killer named — yup, you guessed it, Sylar. A confrontation underneath the FBI office with the one and only Sylar yields some interesting results. Can you say, “faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound, and telekinetically impale you with household appliances?”
Conclusion: Sylar is gonna be a big, big, big problem.
And that’s just the first half of Chapter 3, scripted by comic book scribe Jeph Loeb, and does indeed seem to take a “giant leap” in the storylines of our heroes. The largest leap is by Hiro and Ando, the two buddies guided to their destiny in America by a comic book drawn by a future (?) Isaac that seems to dictate their actions right down to word balloons. As for Peter, his destiny brings him back to someone he thought was beyond him, but thanks to a red umbrella, pouring rain, and a timely kiss
If you’ve been following “Heroes” since “Genesis”, then “Giant Leap” is an incredible episode from beginning to end. The show continues to get more and more “comic booky” (which in this case is a good thing), with heavy doses of humor (Hiro and Ando’s adventures, in particular, are very amusing), suspense, and pure dread — basically everything to do with Sylar, whose apartment Mohinder encounters. Let’s just say Mohinder doesn’t like what he finds.
And finally, since Isaac keeps hanging up on him, you’d think Hiro would let Ando (the English speaking of the duo) talk to Isaac via phone
