Discussion Thread: Heroes Season 3 Episode 7 (3.07) Eris Quod Sum

Written by Sam | October 27th, 2008 | 231 Comments |

Well we finally met Papa Petrelli, and as it turns out, there IS someone out there with the last name Petrelli who is worst than Angela. I guess now we know how Future Peter could have gotten so twisted and dark — it’s in the genes! Besides expecting more confrontations within the Petrelli clan, Episode 7, “Eris Quid Sum” also brings back Kristen Bell’s Elle character, who seeks help from Claire, of all people, when her powers start to go on the fritz from her previous confrontation with Sylar. Getting your head cut open halfway will do that to you, I suppose.

TRAPPED, TERRIFIED AND CORNERED, NATHAN (ADRIAN PASDAR) & TRACY (ALI LARTER), MATT (GREG GRUNBERG) AND PETER (MILO VENTIMIGLIA) STRUGGLE FOR THEIR LIVES AGAINST FAMILIAR FACES — – ELLE (GUEST STAR KRISTEN BELL) MAKES A SHOCKING RETURN

Trapped and terrified, Nathan (Adrian Pasdar) and Tracy (Ali Larter) fight for their lives against a much-changed, monstrous Suresh (Sendhil Ramamurthy) to free themselves, Maya (Dania Ramirez) and the doctor’s other “test subjects.” Elle (guest star Kristen Bell) returns, with a shock for Claire (Hayden Panettiere) and her family. Meanwhile, aware of Peter’s (Milo Ventimiglia) ruthless take down by her rivals at Pinehearst, Angela (Cristine Rose) reaches out to convince Sylar (Zachary Quinto) to save his brother. Since he won’t sign up with the Villains, Daphne (guest star Brea Grant) is ordered by her boss to go back and kill Matt (Greg Grunberg) — or be killed herself. While in awe of the African precog’s power, Hiro (Masi Oka) still questions Usutu’s (guest star Ntare Mwine) advice on how to best face his gathering opponents.

Alan Blumenfeld, Ashley Crow, Robert Forster, Jaime Hector and Blake Shields guest star.

possible SPOILER:

Sylar’s hunger was “unnaturally provoked and can be controlled”. In Episode 3×08 we will learn that Sylar can actually absorb powers like Peter and does not actually have to slice open people’s heads.

Is this true? because it’s kinda lame.

Season 2 Didn't Suck on October 27, 2008 | Reply

Suresh is an evil dude. I’m very happy that Tim Kring decided to put some pep into a generally boring character. The only problem that might arise from this episode is one of a few plot holes that could result from the power steal that occured at the end of 3.6:

1) Did Mr. Petrelli steal Peter’s power of empathic mimicry along with his other powers, or did he just take the acquired ones? I’m going to assume the former, because Peter could just get his powers back if the latter occured.

2) If Peter lost his power of empathic mimicry, is there any way he can get his powers back?

3) Now with the power of empathic mimicry, can’t Mr. Petrelli just copy anyone’s power without actually having to touch them and steal it, like it appears he has to?

Joefish on October 27, 2008 | Reply

Dunno about the first question, and the third one kinda depends on that outcome. But I think the answer to the second question is; yes, he can get them back. The Formula.
Meh, it’s a theory….

Casey the Great on October 28, 2008 | Reply

As to number three…well, I imagine he can just copy powers like Peter, but there is an advantage to his “touch and take” power. If he just copies like Peter, then the person still has their power. If he touches and steals a power, not only does he get the power, but the person becomes powerless. In this way he neutralizes threats to himself. Not only does he now have Peter’s power, but Peter himself is powerless to do anything about it. So far…

POSSIABLE SPOILER:

Well i think peter has lost his powers perminately but we forget about the formula. Since peter was born with powers and the powers are based on dna, its quite safe to assume that he will get his old powers back. The question is though will he be able to use all his old powers since he has had contact with those guys before or does he have to start over. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK

I like how they explained what happened when Peter fell instead of leaving it and revealing it later in like 3 episodes or something lol. I figured thats what happened anyways. Although…

“The dark son will rise”

I think it’s Sylar. :o Either he’s going to fake rise, or he’ll actually go over to the dark side and be evil again. :s

And based on the preview on the next episode, it looks like Elle was there and told Sylar how to get his abilities from other people. This seems like something they definitely decided on later in the series, and just decided to throw it in reguardless if it makes sense, or does anything… I think it should be better than Sylar should figure it out for himself.

MidnightSun,

I don’t think the African was refering to a dark SON, i think he meant it as a dark SUN, as in “The Eclipse”, which is a two parter, episodes 10 and 11 I think.

K Peters dad said that he take ALL of the ability and leaves nothing, then how would peter get his power back and as for the formula wouldn’t he just get some ramdom power rather than the same ability

How's a what? on October 27, 2008 | Reply

Suresh said that a person’s ability is determined by their own unique genetics. So the abilities my seem random b/c they’re different in different people, but really they are predetermined by genetics. If Peter’s genes gave him empathic mimicry before, then that’s what the synthetic formula would give him again.

Destro 24 on October 28, 2008 | Reply

I dunno, I mean Nathan was born with no powers, then they juiced him up with something and now he flies? I thought his parents had empathic mimicry and pre cog telepathic powers. Where did his flying genetics come from. And the triplets, one has super strenth, the other ice powers, and who knows what happened to the third. Where’s the corelation? Matt and his dad have the same powers, as well as sylar and peter. I think they inherit the same powers through birth, but the synthetic upgrades are completely random and unpredictable……or are they?

(Comments wont nest below this level)
John Smith on October 29, 2008 | Reply

The powers seem to be determined by personality traits. Peter has empathy, and his power is emotion based mimicry. Nathan always wanted to rise to the top, and he can fly. Angela always cared about her son’s futures and dreams. Now she sees their future in their dreams. Nikki never felt strong enough, so her alternate personality had super strength. D.L. wanted to escape prison and his trapped life. He walked through walls. Its more need/personality based than DNA. Explains why triplets with nearly identical DNA but different personalities have different powers.

Destro 24 on October 30, 2008 | Reply

Interesting theory, not to mention Mohinder proved the powers are adrenaline based, so what’s going on in everbody’s head, instead of their genes, would most likely determine their upgraded abilities. DL must have been a synthetic too, since the company had all that paper work on him and niki. And Micha was the offspring of 2 synthetics, which is probably how he got his random electro-communication powers.

MidnightSun on October 27, 2008 | Reply

I think the abilities are written in your genes. Meaning that unless you have the ability to gain other abilities, you can only have one ability. Like.. Peter was born with the formula already in him, and so were the others in the group of people who have natural abilities. So it was this that activated something in his genes that gave him the ability he had. I think Arthur took that away, and not the genes. So if he was injected with the formula, he should get the same ability.

If this isnt true, than more than likely, you’d be able to have more than one ability with the formula, and you could just keep injecting yourself to get more and more until you become a junkie. lol I think this provides a probable reason why Peter should get his original ability back :S

I don’t really trust either Petrelli parent. The side I have chosen is Claude’s. Him I trust.

I find it interesting that Arthur is still using contact to take abilities rather than proximity like Peter. I know the contact method totally removes them, but still. Something is going on there.

I’m a bit bummed out that Elle makes no reference to where she was in the GN but at least I know that will be resolved come morning.

Interesting that Maury actually gives a care what happens to Matt.

And I have to wonder if Arthur was lying and Angela actually gave Gabriel up to save him. I know Gabriel doesn’t totally trust Arthur, otherwise he wouldn’t have saved Peter. Granted he had to make it look good and let Peter get hurt, but I get the impression he was trying to get Peter out and find out more info. I also think that Gabriel is loyal to Angela but may be trying to do undercover stuff.

I thought the same thing but then I realized that he used contact because he wanted to take away Maya’s ability, but he just straight up killed papa parkman without taking his ability via contact, therefore i conclude that he used peter’s power to absorb parkman’s without taking it, because it was unnecessary to take it by contact.

i love heroes it’s my favorite show.what i am about to say most of u probably already know, but for those of u who don’t here goes.i’ve heard it stated that peter and gabriels main ability are so much alike because they are different variations of thier fathers power.i thought at the time that none of this would make sense, especially since nathans powers are so different from his other two younger siblings.but as the series has explained to us,nathan was given his power.i believe sylars main power is the ability to understand how things work,as displayed when gabriel aquired his second ability which i believe was telekenesis.but because of his genes prehaps like peter sylars dna is like mohinder descibed it, as mosaic, allowing for a blend, emphatic mimicry, constantly forming and reforming.the only difference is that sylars dna allows for it to be altered, and his oringinal power shows him how to accomplish this.as displayed in the episode in season one wich hiro went back in time to kill sylar at his mothers house.when hiro stopped time,it took sylar a fraction of a second to understand how hiros powers work, therefore knowing how to become unfrozen.peter is a wonderful character, for one reason due to his power, emphatic mimicry.it is believed that peter obtains his abilitys simply by being around those he is in contact with.but i donnot believe this to be totally true,or his power would just be called mimicry.prehaps he does absorb every power he comes in contact with, but as the show has showed us,he does not or cannot access every ability absorbs.peter has to emphasis on a certain level with the person who’s ability he has absorbed.like with sylar.peter has encountered sylar mabye more then he has with any other hero, yet he had to ask sylar to give him his ability, why is that? as well as the fact that peter has been around more heroes then everyone else period, but has only displayed a chosen few.prehaps his body is the filing cabinet and his emphathy with others serves as the key to unlocking that specific drawer.without that empathy prehaps he retains the ability but can never use it.in other words the real key to peters powers is his ability to relate to someone in someway.prehaps that is why he could not recieve sylars powers until he felt the same need to accuire knowledge, as is a byproduct of slyars hunger.and there father,i don’t think he has eithers shortcomings.he can steal ur power.not by killing u,and not by bonding with them, simply by touching them.he may be more evolved than the two put together

Hmmmm on October 28, 2008 | Reply

That made a bit of sense. A bit jumbled. But I get what you mean now.

the brain on October 29, 2008 Subscribed to comments via email | Reply

Thats stupid. Peter does not have to have a reltationship with the person to use there power. While he was in the future he(present peter) used super speed and he never even saw the person who ran past him and future peter. Some people make up the lammest theory

Well well well…Sylar slowed Peter down during his fall. Looks like he is going to play the role of bad guy for a while to infultrate Pinehurst.

However, does Arther really believe that Peter just happened to survive that fall? It seems to me that he just might know what Sylar did and is going to see how it plays out. I really feel bad for Peter. I also liked Claire and Elle together.

I missed tonight’s episode. But I have some theories and questions.

First off, Clair… She is “special” according to Sylar, and herself in the future, but is she really more special than anyone else? And if so how? I am taking a guess. But since Arthur came to town and started stealing/removing powers, perhaps Clair is the one person who he can’t mess with. Perhaps her power is not adrenaline driven but hardwired into who she is. That would be nice, since Adam is gone.

The Hunger-michiem may be on to something about it… But if Sylar’s main thing is just understanding cause and effect, how does cutting heads open answer someone’s intentions. I bring this up, because peter cut’s open Nathans head in the future, not to learn to fly, but to understand his reasons. Same with his mom, why not just read their mind and understand it. Duh! The hunger thing make’s no sense unless it means the hunger for power. Which means that he can just absorb power to gain power.

Big papa. Can he give powers too? Does his abilities fade? Why would he have needed to fake his death in the past, why not just keep taking peoples powers like adams right away. If he is so bad ass, who would have stopped him back then? Side note, as far as peter’s powers being gone. All we know is that Arthur said they were gone forever, and I don’t trust that. Perhaps peter’s body will go back to “abnormal” after it get’s over it’s shock. Dna is dna.

MidnightSun on October 28, 2008 | Reply

Peter isnt as advanced as Maury or even Matt. He can’t do the same things they can with reading minds. Peter can only read what you’re thinking at the time. He can’t just go into someone’s mind and see whatever he wants whenever he wants. This is why he had to cut open their heads because it’s not like Angela just randomly thought of every secret she was hiding at once. He couldn’t just look into Nathan’s head to understand why he did the things he did, so he sliced him up too. Even though he never really got a chance to look at it in the first place.. :S

OK first off it’s Claire.

Now what’s a michiem? It’s not power Sylar hungers for, it’s knowledge. He sees a brain like an encyclopedia. It’s like reading the title of a book, not understanding what it means and then opening that book. So this was why Peter tried to cut open his brother an mother heads. He knew their intentions but didn’t fully understand it, so he wanted to read their brains so to speak.

As many people have said, I think he’ll need the formula to regain his power, but you may be right, after his body gets over the shock he might get his powers back. Though Arthur would probably be aware of this.

i knew there was a good reason that angela allowed sylar to slice that girls head open. the episode where she tells him that she is his mom, i forgot what episode that was but anyway he now has the ability to touch something and see where it has been what it has done which is an important power for him to have at
