Discussion Thread: Heroes Season 3 Episode 11 (3.11) The Eclipse Part 2

Written by Sam | November 30th, 2008 | 177 Comments |

The Petrelli boys are stuck in the jungles of Haiti with the Haitian, which is not such a bad person to be stuck in a country with when, you know, it’s his country and he’s named after it and all. Meanwhile, back in the good ol USA, Ando attempts to help Hiro recover his memories with the help of a comic book geek, we finally discover Daphne’s dreaded secret, and HRG goes a-huntin’ for himself some heroes. Lucky for our bespectacled killer, the people he’s hunting happens to have lost their powers thanks to the eclipse. Here, then, is your official discussion thread for the second part of Heroes’ Season 3 two-parter, “The Eclipse”.

THE HEROES CONTINUE TO DISCOVER THEIR TRUE ABILITIES UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF THE ECLIPSE

The eclipse continues to impact the Heroes’ abilities as Elle (Kristen Bell) and Sylar (Zachary Quinto) face off against a vengeful H.R.G. (Jack Coleman) while Claire (Hayden Panettiere) struggles to survive. In Haiti, Peter and Nathan (Milo Ventimiglia and Adrian Pasdar) join forces with the Haitian (Jimmy Jean-Louis) to battle the Haitian’s brother, Baron Samedi (guest star Demetrius Grosse), and Nathan comes to a shocking decision. In the meantime, Ando (James Kyson Lee), Sam (guest star Seth Green) and Frack (guest star Breckin Meyer) work hard to get Hiro’s (Masi Oka) memory back with the help of the “9th Wonders” comic books at a local comic bookstore.

Brea Grant and Robert Forster guest stars.

which is virtually nothing because peter cries about is lost powers to much and this show suck even worse now

I don’t see peter crying about losing his powers. In fact I see him doing great things inspite of losing his powers, constantly wanting to be of use, and still a hero.

am i the only one who thinks them loosing powers is brilliant. (of course i want them back soon) i find it interesting to see what they really can do or how they react. with powers the majority of heroes moan about wanting to be normal. now they are who still wants that FEW thats who. best few episodes this season IMO

AndrewK on December 1, 2008 Subscribed to comments via email | Reply

I agree with you, them losing their powers is brilliant. I’m looking forward to everyone getting their powers back, but I’m really liking seeing how they react without them.

it’s really funny seeing sylar do his finger move to use his telekinesis minus the telekinesis hahaha, and also matt looks ridiculous staring daphne’s dad without his mind reading abilities. hahaha the whole powerless-eclipse thing is very brilliant, brings out the heroes/villains sense of humor. heheheheheh

I love Heroes -’Villains’ but…

Peter not having abilities is just wrong. He is THE most poweful, but doesn’t have abilities anymore. I hoping like hell he gets them back soon!

I’m thinking that if he had his abilities no-one could live with him, therefore in order to have the season the way it is and to have Villains able to be Villains in this capacity, there would have to be NO Peter as he would solve the problems. If he kept his abilities, there would be no villains as they are! Future seasons may be different as there may be a way people can cretae the effects of the Hatian’s ability in blocking Peter’s abilities in close proximity. Remember the first episode when we see future ‘All Powerful’ Peter running away. Why was he running when he could go invisible, fly etc etc… Also, in the future Daphne was scarred of him, why? Had he met her before? If so, that would be another ability he could call on to get away i.e. no need to be running as he was.

I’m thinking it must be Mohinder that injects Peter to give him his original Power back, or it re-ignites that ability which in turn remembers all other aquired abilities. So, Arthur can take people’s abilities but cannot alter the DNA completely, he must just freeze it…? Then with the formula, it ignites the DNA again.

Hope that makes sense…

Think Fast on December 1, 2008 | Reply

Peter is too much of a dumbass to “fix” everything. most of the time he does not fully understand all the powers he has, let alone how to use most of them. He also is very gullible and has on numerous occasions been the one to nearly destroy everything (he was the exploding man, he almost led Adam to releasing the virus, he came back and helped start the current timeline). Peter not having powers is a good thing. It allows him to maybe realize how dumb and trusting he can be and that he needs to become a bit more wiser and distrustful. If he does get his absorbing power back, maybe if he gets wiser he will be the most powerful. But if he gets that power back and continues to remain dumb, well that does not make him the most powerful. On the contrary, it practically makes him the most dangerous.

Casey on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I think Nathan was adopted it was said that he did not have natural abilities but was given and injected with the artificial power. Author takes power by transferring from one to him, Sylar takes by gutting their brains out, and Peter just absorbs… See the blood line here… I think Nathan’s shock decision is to disown the Petrelli Family cause he found out that he was adopted… hehe

Marcus on December 1, 2008 | Reply

Peter had to lose his powers in order to get rid of his “sickness”. Papa Petrelli in effect saved him from Sylars power. As for the direction of the show. LOVE IT. Can’t get enough of those Heroes, or Villians for that matter!

I’ve got a question. If the eclipse blocks powers, how was Adam Monroe able to live for as long as he did? Because when Arthur took his power he turned straight to dust.

NavyGater on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I WAS JUST SAYING THIS VERY SAME THING THE OTHER DAY! I HOPE THEY MAKE A POINT OF TELLING US HOW THIS ECLIPSE IS SO MUCH DIFFERENT FROM ALL THE OTHERS THAT HAVE HAPPEND IN THE PAST.

I agree that this TEMPORARY no powers thing is very exciting. A lot of characters have been complaining about how horrible it is without them and now they have to find a way to live without them. Its brilliant. Claire for example has been complaing all season about how horrible it is to not feel pain…i bet shes regreting that now. And the Daphne scene last ep. was crazy cool. Nathan has also had his share of wishing he did not have powers and now im sure he wants them back too.

king genesis on December 1, 2008 | Reply

well soulless to answer your questioin that would be a writer mistake. other wise arthure would have known exactly what the eclipse did and adam as well. cause there powers would have turned on and off for the last 45 years arthure 400 for adam/kensei. thats why the first seven episodes rocked even when peter lost his powers. but as soon as they did the whole eclipse thing is were it really went bad real bad. if they said that claire thing in her brain can give powers to any body and arthur can take it and thats as far is they went that would have been beautifull no need for an eclipse to f*** everything up. there i just saved season 3..hahaa no if only i could go back in time :) lol wheres hiro

Estacado on December 1, 2008 | Reply

Perhaps the eclipse is not responsible for the loss of their powers. Maybe it is something more than that. What king genesis said makes sense, aurthur and adam would have known that the eclipse would take away powers. So, instead of ruling it as a “writers mistake”, I am ruling it as “maybe it’s not the eclispe”. Call it wishful thinking, but i would like to think that there is more to this power loss than just the eclipse.

I’ve seen a couple theories that this eclipse is different…don’t know but maybe it is different, and maybe it is paired with something else, unknown to us as of now. Sounds like it could be…I am sure they will explain it to us in the upcoming episodes.

Eclipse on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I think that because everyone has lost their powers during the eclipse when they get their powers back peter wqill get his powers back with
them. Or because Arthur Petrelli’s power leaves scars peter might get injected with claire’s blood and her power will ‘heal the scars’ and he will regain his power and Claire and when he goes to face his father he will regain all of his previous abilities because he will sap them off of him and then he will kick everyone’s ass because he is too powerful.

The rumor is that a blonde will die permanently b4 the end of volume 3. Myguess is elle, tracey, or daphne. I seriously doubt it will b claire. Just watch she will die and then come back to life once the eclipse ends in this episode

Casey the Great on December 2, 2008 | Reply

Hey Anne, way to “guess” - you just list ALL the blonde “heroes” (minus Meredith) and you have a three out of four chance of being right no matter who actually dies.

Example: The rumor is that Team A and Team B are playing a game of basketball this weekened. My “guess” is that the winner will be Team A or Team B, but definitely not Team F. Wow. Look at me go. I win the game of Heroes.

Killa on December 3, 2008 | Reply

Well I think nathan was saying that what his father is doing isn’t so bad, which is giving people powers through injections, because people with abilities can save others just like the hatian did for that village. Now nathan thinks if more people have abilities then they can save more than a village but the whole world to, so now he’s going to go work with his father to make that happen.

(guess he wont now) i liked seeing the old mohinder 2. (weak nerd not including his fight scene)

Nathan saw that the Hatian was able to stop a warlord who was doing horrible things in the country he dominated, and he was able to do it specifically because he had a power. What Nathan was saying was that giving people powers, so long as they are the right people, could solve the problems of genocide, murder, slavery, and other such things that happen in the world.

Sylar is NOT a patrelli (THANK GOD). Nathan is half good, half pawn like he’s supposed to be. i think the theme here as Sylar put it is that people never really change.. nor should this show. back to basics. bravo kring. bravo.

Xamuel on December 2, 2008 | Reply

It’s bad ’cause of one simple reason:

Who can decide who’s good or bad, right or wrong? Who knows who will be suitable with power (and this goes for real life as well)before they even get it? The people who think they are able to judge this are just as evil as the ones they are trying to point fingers at (George Bush is a very good example). I think it’s cool the show relates to real life problems in it’s own way.

I knew Sylar couldn’t be a Petrelli! I don’t think the Sylar future we saw is going to exist. That would also mean Claire, and Daphne were bad guys. Similar to the Season 1 alternate timeline.

Too bad we had to lose the beautiful Elle.

Peter/Nathan conflict was set-up great.

Hiro had the best moment towards the end at the Bennett house.

Claire is still whiny.

Turns out Mohinder has an evil streak without his powers after that beat down he laid on flint.

ClairePetrelli on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I can believe in this episode. It didn’t answer that much question, and it wasn’t one of my favorites, but it was really cool. Still can’t believe they killed Elle, I love her. The next episodes sounds so great, I can’t wait for it. And Iwas told that the episode number 19 of this season, who’ll be directed by Greg Beeman is called ‘Shades of Grey’ and it will be another Sylar backstory, can’t wait for it.

Gaia on December 1, 2008 | Reply

Though I am excited for bad sylar, I don’t really think it made sense. He has Elle’s power, so to slice her head seems moot (though I guess the promo pics from next episode show he didn’t take her brain out, so basically I guess he just wanted to kill her). Also, I would figure Elle would explode again like last time in reaction to the pain, but she didn’t.

As for Daphne, in one of the first episodes of this season Hiro and Ando were in her apt. and they found a track medal of hers from h.s., that’s even what they use to try to get the formula half back. This insinuates she had these powers, perhaps to a lesser effect, earlier on-this contradicts her having CP.

The Hiro/Sylar/Elle/Claire scene rocked…

Hmmmm on December 1, 2008 | Reply

Read GN number 113, it’s not her medal.

I freakin’ loved tonight’s episode! I hope that it’s true that Sylar isn’t a Petrelli. I loved the end with Hiro popping into the Bennett house. I loved pretty much everything about tonight’s episode.

Well I’m not crazy about the whole Daphne/Matt deal. Hiro is cool but the whole being 10 years old thing is getting on my nerves. I mean, Hiro’s kinda childish anyways. And it doesn’t bother me in the slightest that Elle may die. I’m just glad that Sylar is getting back to himself. I mean he tried being good but some men are born to be bad.

I keep having this thought that maybe Claire and SYlar are connected somehow. I kkeep thinking that they’ll be revealed as brother and sister and that their father will turn out to be Adam Monroe. Pretty far fetched huh?

Rightprice on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I think that Peter will end up geting his power(s) back by formula injection rather than this eclipse. However, it took him like half of season 1 originally to even realize that he had all the powers that he did. That being the case he could have regained all of his powers or even just the mimiking power, which would have given him flight, and bullet proof skin, and just not realize it yet.

Rightprice on December 1, 2008 | Reply

I was really hoping that one of the soldiers would have shot Peter when he held his gun in the air in surrender, and that the bullets would just bounce off. That would have been a great way to reveal that he had his power(s) back.

Does anyone else notice a few things -

1. V 4 will focus on homeland security.
2. Nathen is starting to do things that is making him turn for the worse.
3. Nathan will be in white house = in charge of homeland.
4. in the final episode “Nathan makes a move that will have global repercussions.”

So i suggest the theory, at the end of this volume, nathan puts into power the idea that people with powers = bad.
nathan captures the main characters and puts them onto a plane and then…. i dont want to give too much away, but nathan sends the hunter after them…

What you think?

which allows one less gap in this story

Yeah but when Adam died from not having his powers he turned into a pile of dust and bone fragments, so what he can come back from that lol?

I think that Adam died when his power was taken away because he was hundreds of years old. Once his power was taken away he was left in the state that he would be wtihout his power. Notice that he decayed into a skeleton then turned to dust?
