Brea Grant Talks Daphne, Reveals Heroes SPOILERS

By Sam | August 28, 2008 (10:58 pm)

In case you haven’t noticed yet, NBC and Tim Kring have invested quite a bit of their Season 3 time on a new character named Daphne Millbrook, to be played by Brea Grant. The character will have superspeed, and the first time we see her, she’ll have stolen something very valuable from Hiro. The Brea Grant publicity tour continues, this time with an interview with Comic Book Resources, where Grant reveals (perhaps unintentionally) a couple of SPOILERS from the upcoming season. As always, turn away now, and do not read on unless you want to know…

The whole interview can be found at CBR. Below are the highlights.

She reveals about her powers compared to Hiro’s:

“He can stop time but because I’m so fast I can move within his time-stopped world,” Grant explained. “We sort of cancel each other’s powers out. I can run around in his stopped world but I can’t run at super-speeds. He can’t do anything about it, so it’s a good dynamic between the two of us. He’s constantly the good guy, where as I’m more of the bad guy.”

Okay, that’s not really true. They don’t actually “cancel” each other’s powers out. Remember, Hiro can time travel, too, not just stop time. It wouldn’t matter how fast she can run if he just, say, go back 20 seconds into the past to do something over, or 20 seconds into the future to intercept something she’s about to do. The notion that their powers cancel each other out is ridiculous.

And this part basically confirms my belief that they’re setting Daphne up as an anti-hero with a redemption arc coming later in the season:

“I wouldn’t say that deep down she’s a terrible person or anything,” said Grant. “She’s no Sylar but she’s a thief. I think in the end she’s sort of an innocent. She’s been a thief for a long time, she’s been on her own and had to take care of herself. Now all of the sudden she is faced with these people who have these much bigger issues at stake and that’s going to change the way she reacts to things. But my character has many turns throughout the season. There is much to look forward to.”

Plus, if you’ve seen her scenes in the trailers, she’s way too peppy and “silver tongued” to be a true villain like, say, Sylar. He just slices your head open. She’s liable to back-talk you to death.

Now here’s the SPOILER part: Grant reveals that she’s already worked with Linderman, and that their scenes take place in the present, and are not flashbacks.

While discussing her experience working with a particular actor on the show, Grant revealed some interesting information about the upcoming season. “I got to work with Malcolm McDowell and it was amazing,” she said. “He’s so cool and has about a million stories. He’s also the ultimate bad guy. He’s so evil that it’s cool.”

But isn’t Linderman dead? Nope, as we’ve already learned from these mega spoilers, he’s very much alive, and still have plans for the Petrelli boys.

You can read the rest of the interview over at CBR.

Could Hiro actually find somone that can rival his powers? I thought that he couldn’t teleport or move through time while time was frozen… maybe he didn’t need to before.

As far as the time travel and time “stopping” power goes. I think the only reason that Brea’s character can move around when time is “stopped” is because Hiro doesn’t “stop” time, he slows it down to the point that you can’t see it move. If you remember season one when Hiro wanted to steal the Kenzi (misspelled?) sword and he tried to “stop” time, but only slowed it down. Whose to say that’s not what he always does, but with a higher effect. Hiro BENDS time and space, he doesn’t BREAK it. Otherwise the fact that Daphne can move around when Hiro stops time is BS to me.

in season 1, hiro’s powers were weak, he did not stop time to his full potential. if he tries he will be able to “stop” time for real. he has to develop his powers. as for Brea, i think it will be really cool to see her kick hiro’s a**.

No I am with Estacado on this one. I think that maybe Hiro does not stop time but slows it down. I mean that just makes way more sense sorry Princess D.

yeah and his power will so strong that he can stop time and icsolate one person or maybe a group of people to have their time still going, just like when he warned peter on the subway, now thats control! and imho i think that if brea can be that fast to move when hiro freezes time she might as well have time powers as well cuz if she can move that fast its almost like teleporting they might work it out tho they always manage it to make some kind of sence

I hope Hiro breaks out of his “innocentness” this season. I’m ready for the Hiro from the subway.

Masi once referred to his power not as a stopping of time, technically time cannot “stop” because it isn’t “something.” Masi explained Hiro’s power as Hiro stepping out of the dimensions we know, and into a dimensional plane which exists devoid of time.

I know this to not be true because we all exist in every dimensional plane on some level as the quantum particles that make us up bounce in and out of them. So, my theory is that Hiro halts the motion of particles, perhaps throughout the universe, but also perhaps localized as well. He does this by exerting a kind of telekinetic pressure on the universe.

To avoid getting too wordy here just understand that space-time is a limited system, though extremely immense, the area past the edge of expansion is litterally “less” than space. So, because it is a closed system, Hiro doesn’t have to telekinetically hold everything in place. He simply has to provide a small amount of pressure in this higher dimension and it will equally distribute to all places.

Think of the Tony the Tiger Diver and Bernoulli’s principle to gain an understanding of how that works. Squeeze the bottle and the diver sinks, let go and the diver floats. The reason for this is because the pressure you apply to the outside of the bottle hits the fluid inside and directs the pressure to all sides of the diver. As the pressure increases, the density increases, and the pressure on the diver forces him to stay stuck at the bottom of the bottle until the pressure is released.

So, my assumption here, is that Daphney has a kind of atomic viscosity which allows her to move at those speeds without tearing her skin off her bones. When Hiro exerts this dimensional pressure she no longer can move at the same rate because of the “dimensional friction” he is imparting through his ability. For her this would be very much like it is when you run into a body of water. You’re running at top speed no trouble then you hit the water and it becomes harder to move your legs forward. This is due to the increase in the density of the substance you are moving through. Water is more dense than air and stopped time is more “dense” than normal flow time.
